Got it today, some of my personal thoughts and suggestions, chime in if you have some as well.
A: resolution looks poor after looking at iPhone 4.
B: no percentage option for battery ????
C: cannot choose a picture to use as backround ????
D: "swipe" back in the "now playing" screen is annoying, going to album art and then background.
E: so much space up and down between names of "artists", "composers", "songs" and so forth, could put half the spacing and be perfectly legible and actually see more than 3 on each page.
should have "swipe" after top button like iPhone? Should also have swipe to turn off if u hold top button like iPhone.
we have had most of the above stuff for a while in iPhone, why wouldnt you add this to you "sick new nano"

Because the new Nano's are not running iOS or even iOS Lite. They are running something else that was made to look like iOS.

Why don't u just add the fact that it has no Wi-fi, no GPS, no front and rear facing camera? Oh.. throw it no camera flash, too?
Iphone 4 is a smart phone. But, yea... sure we can compare them each other.

i dont think asking for battery to be displayed in % and choosing a picture for background is out of this world.. if it has a pictures folder.. and you can choose pictures for background, then why cant this be integrated?
if it has a battery sign, then why cant this become an option?
the rest is programming, they didn't put much thought into the software imo.. it seems like some monday detail to me.

Most of those issues are software related. Submit feedback to Apple.

Pretty sure you can choose your own background. You need to add the pictures to the iPod.
Edit: maybe I'm wrong.

You guys are really expecting a lot from the new Nano. I have an iPhone 4 and I still bought it. Been using it for 3 days straight now and I really love the fact that I am able to listen to the radio and 'song crossfade' feature is great.
I personally think Apple crippled it from other features because of the current battery technology. I tried using a bluetooth adapter with it and the battery went down fast.

What about no contact and calendar support? If my 5 year old iPod 5G can have them then why can't this thing?
I just don't see why they removed this feature from the nano OS. While I'm not a computer programmer, I just don't think its a massive technical challenge to add this most basic of features.

It's obvious apple just wants to make us suffer, so they can sell new ones next year.

I like the size. I like the clip on the back. I find it generally very easy to use, and have noted a definite improvement in the sound on my old Nano which is really pleasing.
The loss of the video feature may annoy some, but it does not bother me; nor did I ever use the contacts and calendars feature.
What I find annoying is
1. The fact that there is no physical pause/resume play button (I may get used to this, but not yet).
2. I am really disappointed that the screen does not display the track length in elapsed and remaining time. For anything over a three minute pop song this is a really useful feature, and I find it very frustrating that it has gone.
3. I can't work out why cover flow has been dropped, either, but I suppose I can cope without that.
4. The backgrounds are really drab and dull, and like others, I would love to be able to select my own photo. Seems a curious omission.
These are just initial observations.

If there's no progress bar then it's pointless for listening to podcasts.

For me "personally", none of these issues are of concern. I wanted a new "music" player to replace my aging and sometimes quirky ViPod with more capacity than the shuffle. Nothing more, nothing less. If I wanted more I would have purchased the iPod touch. Oh, I already have an iPhone:rolleyes:, so I don't need a touch. This is the perfect workout device, and with a good set of earbuds with remote, I'm in music heaven.

Heh my biggest gripe is no capacity updates, I could probably get over the touch screen and all the dropped features [after all I only use my iPod for music anyway] if they would have updated capacities.
The percentage thing with the battery? Apple has never done that in the past why would they start doing it now?
D, the nano should have never went touch screen in the 1st place..or at least not how they've done it. So I'd agree I bet the swiping is annoying as heck especially since it can barely hold any icons on the screen or text for that matter.
Resolution on the screen? c'mon its 1.5" big, what are you going to view on that little screen that would make it so important to have a great retina resolution.
Picture as a background? Yeah that'd be nice, but clearly apple half assed the nano model anyway. The interface is so plain its ridiculous.
There should be more space on the screen you're right, in fact, the screen should be larger than last years model not smaller.
Even with all the complaints I have for this years release, all apple had to do was increase the capacity and I would have bought it...but no we are stuck in 2008 with 16GB capacities YET again, further compacted by the same price point for a clearly inferior product from last years model.

Or a Whaaaaambulance? Yeah, old joke. However, iEvolution dealt with it correctly: after weighing the pros and cons of the new model, iE decided not to buy it. Apple can't satisfy everyone all the time.
The battery life graphic is an approximation; I've seen my battery indicator actually increase a notch based on usage (video or heavy screen usage vs. just audio) once or twice when out and about and not being actively charged. A percentage reading on a battery that small would probably be rather inaccurate, and those who are that obsessed with battery life would probably be better served by a model with a larger battery.

Further to what I wrote above, there is a progress bar after all. You have to swipe to a second screen to see it, but it is there. The only difference is that in the case of audiobooks it only shows elapsed time in the chapter, not the track. Since my iPods are used for audiobooks about 50% of the time, time will tell whether this turns out to be an improvement or a disadvantage.
I'm slowly getting used to the new interface, but can't pause the thing without looking at it yet. I must say I feel a bit like Captain Picard trying to hit his communicator button.
The other thing I have discovered is that if you want to sync photographs, you can't fill it up to the max with music. This was the case with my 3rd generation nano as well, but the required buffer here seems to be bigger. Unless you have about 450-500mb free, it won't copy any photos across.
I've found it is useful to have the radio: though I realise this feature was also on the previous model it is new to me, and thus an improvement from my point of view (as is the pedometer).

I used one for a bit in an Apple Store today, and I hate to say it but I continue to believe that Apple made a blunder with this one.
The screen is way too small to be of any real use, as soon as you place a finger on it virtually the entire screen is unviewable. Browsing through music is gimped because only a few selections appear on the screen at once, and the design between various sections is inconsistent and ridiculously complicated at times (the various taps and swipes to go between music controls, for example). Also I'm kind of curious - when the iPod freezes or needs to be reset, exactly how do you do it considering it only has the sleep/wake button? Unless Apple has somehow hooked up the volume controls to be clicked/held along with it, I don't see how it's possible.

For many of the reasons described above, I'm sticking with my 5th gen.
FYI: To reset the 6th gen nano, hold down the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down buttons simultaneously for 6 seconds.

Uh, I don't think the previous nano's were any better for this honestly. None of them actually had a power off button. Shoot, my 3rd gen you couldn't even tell to go to sleep, you just had to let it sleep itself.
Oh, and I just looked up on the online manual. To reset the 6th gen:
First, make sure iPod nano is charged. Then press the Sleep/Wake button and the Volume Down button for 6 seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
And so far, after having one, I don't find any of your other problems to be true *shrug*. I love the interface. For browsing through severla songs, they have the alphabet quick find bar to go to the area the song would be (you don't have to mash your whole finger on the screen, just make sure a little bit touches. So I find my finger doesn't block at all cause I'm lightly touching the screen). And it has inertia scrolling so you flick, let it roll down til it gets near, and then you fine tune. Or if you are really snazzy, flick, hit screen when your song shows up to stop the scrolling, voila! Pretty easy for me (a helluva lot easier than the clickwheel for me honestly) but I've had an iphone for more than 2 years so maybe it's just that I am used to that interface.

We have to keep meeting like this:D Less than 24 hours with my new nano and I absolutely love it. The sound quality is better than my V iPod and better than my wife's shuffle. No issues or problems. I brought it to work today along with my Sennheiser 680i ear buds with remote and everyone loves it. Two of the people told me they were going to buy the new nano (and the Sennheiser ear buds) and another may buy it. I've only shown a few people but the concensus is the same. It's awesome! It does exactly what it is suposed to do and that is, play music. Btw, I like the radio too.

Actually, I think I'll use the radio more in this one than the fifth gen. The fifth gen it was awkward when walking to change from all songs over to radio, back to all songs if the radio sucked (which is why I didn't put it on radio cause I didn't want to be stuck listening to radio or have to stop to get the ipod switched over from radio when nothing was on). This one it is much quicker with the interface, particularly cause I can place the radio button high up and not be stuck with where ever it happens to be on the list (I really like being able to customize placement of menus, something I always thought the previous ipods lacked. I never understood why they wouldn't let you move menus around). Plus being able to clip it somewhere means I can clip it somewhere easy to reach with one hand so I can use it one handedly while I walk cause it will hold itself while I try to choose things (easier to look at it for a quick second).

Well I got my new Nano on Sunday and I have to say, I love it also.
It's my first Nano. I have 120GB iPod so a Nano never made much sense to me. But this is just perfect for me! I go out running quite a lot and the armband was never appealing to me so I ended up running with my iPod in my hand. Now, I just clip my Nano and off I go.
I got the 8GB version since I only need it to workout but there's enough room to add my favourite Artists and take it wherever. I love the Radio function also. It's so simple and easy to use with the touch screen.
All in all, it's a perfect piece to add to my collection. And the price is not so steep that I'll worry about losing it/dropping it. The only thing is I picked up the Blue Nano and I kinda want the Pink now.... Oh well!

The previous gens had five buttons located in the click wheel. To reset it was as simple as holding down play+select for ten seconds. On this one... a single button. Confusion ensues.
But looks like my suggestion in my post was right anyway, about it being coupled with the volume buttons.

Got my new 16GB red one today. Finally have it all up and running after installing 10.0, and having a few problems with syncing.
It didn't default to loading only checked songs, so I had to check the box after the original sync, remove a bunch of songs manually, and then resync it again in order to get all of my checked songs on it. Hopefully it won't try to pull anything like that again so I can leave it on the automatic setting. (I'm assuming this was caused by the 10.0 upgrade.)
Jury's still out on sound quality, since I've only used the installed headphones. The loading is very responsive (I'm coming from a 2G clickwheel iPod). It's also easier than I thought it would be to navigate long lists.
The screen is great so far. The album artwork screen is very impressive. There is some kind of buildup around the edge of the screen, which is actually what has bugged me the most so far. I'm hoping that it's just a little extra glue residue from the attaching of the screen and that it will work itself out naturally. The worst possibility would be that it will collect grime since it's not set completely flush with the frame. Still considering getting a case--I've seen them in other stores, but they didn't have any at the Apple store.
As you can tell, I'm happy so far but trying to remain pessimistic in case something goes wrong and I have to take it back.
Apple must be really convinced of the sturdiness to put the headphone jack so close to the edge of the frame. Before buying I looked at all the display models, and couldn't find a single scratch on their screens after several days out there, so the screen seems to be pretty tough.
I'm sure I'm missing a lot of other things that I should comment on.

My 2nd gen nano's headphone jack is also very close to the edge, and it hasn't been a problem in the three-plus years I've had it. The structural integrity of these aluminum-cased nano models is top notch; Apple was smart to get away from the plastic casing as shown on the 1st gen.

And as I think about it more now, I suppose that going small has its advantages here. With so little weight, there's much less momentum when the nano hits the ground, and less ability to do damage. There's a big difference between dropping the nano and dropping a 5-pound laptop (we all know what that can do to even an aluminum case).

Nah. I have just bought a pair of Sennheiser CX 680. Tested them on both the nano and my laptop, there's a big volume difference. I also tried other headphones with the nano and it's the same thing. I'm not saying it's not loud by other people's standards, but I would have liked it louder.

I have owned the new iPod nano 6th gen (16GB, red) for two days now and I wanna share my first impressions about it:
*After getting the nano out of its box I was surprised just how small it is. I have the tendency of losing almost everything at some point, so I'm sure that's gonna happen also with the tiny nano. That said -> The nano could be bigger imo. would 2" screen really be too much to ask? The only safe place to keep it when its with me is on my left hand as a watch. So, Im gonna buy that nanowatch strap soon. Also, I gotta get somekind of a bluetooth adapter and a bt headset 'cos imo it looks kinda stupid when the Apple earphone cord goes from your ears to your wrist  That's a sure way to tell people who wants to steal one: "hey you know what this is don't ya?"
*Here's some ramdom software observations:
- Why doesn't the nano have an option NOT to lock the screen?? I'm kinda annoyed that I have to open the screen over and over again when I want to switch songs. Also there is no option to choose the timeframe after which the screen locks itself (and yes, I know about the Apple mic earphones ).
-Why doesn't the nano have an option to go to the next song by shaking the nano when the screen is locked?? I only can do that when the nano is not locked. the only thing that works when the screen is locked is to + or - the player volume.
-My biggest annoyance with the radio is that when you give a station a star, pressing next only moves you between the starred stations!! WTF is that?? On this situation, the only way to move to next station is to manually swipe your finger on the frequency bar  Removing the star solves the issue and you can move to the next station by pressing next button.
-Would it had been impossible to add a video playback feature on the new nano?? IMO it's stupid that when I have syncronised my podcasts from iTunes to the nano, it shows the video podcasts as a still pictures  I don't think that the nano's screen is too small to watch video podcasts and so I think this still picture thing is stupid
-Can someone tell me how to shut down/exit the radio so that it doesn't stay on on the background?
So, those are my pet peeves with the new iPod nano touch. It is a good player, but that said it could be better. IMO paying €209 is too much when comparing to my previous 3rd gen nano and it's features. I payed the same €209 of the 3rd gen nano and I feel like I got more features. But that said, the new nano at least is a killer high tech watch :D and I'm sure that the next years 7th gen nano (most likely to be a touch as well) is going to be a winner with its bigger screen, video playback etc. Can't wait for that :D

1. It clips on to your body. I'm sure Apple worried that your normal walking movement would trigger the 'Shake to Shuffle'.. hence why it only works while the screen is on. In fact, I had an iPod Touch that I kept in my pocket and Shake to Shuffle would kick in very often, to the point where it got so annoying I turned it off.
2. Really? This screen is horrendously tiny, I couldn't imagine watching videos on that... hopefully Apple releases a 2" or 2.5" Nano next time around.
3. While listening to the Radio, hit 'Stop' (the big white square) and swipe back. :)
Hope this helps!

I used to watch videos on a nano 1st gen (through ipod linux) so that's not an excuse. If it has a screen, if it allows picture rendering, it should allow video playback as well. It doesn't matter if you use it or not (just like I couldn't care less for the pedometer, nike+ and other stuff).
Also, a 2" or a 2.5" screen would suck as a watch, and I'm guessing this iWatch thing will stick around, especially after a bluetooth wristband release.

Nah. I have just bought a pair of Sennheiser CX 680. Tested them on both the nano and my laptop, there's a big volume difference. I also tried other headphones with the nano and it's the same thing. I'm not saying it's not loud by other people's standards, but I would have liked it louder.
are you in europe? We have the volume of our ipods severely restricted compared to the US :(

Oh, that must be the reason. Any possible fix?
Can any US owner check his "ipodsettings.xml" and tell me the value for volumelimit?
mine is like this: <VolumeLimit>216</VolumeLimit>

-riley
so your main complaint is that its not a scaled down version of an iphone 4

If you go under the covers (quick & dirty - cmd prompt in Win 7, show hidden, etc.) you can see what's on the iPod and where. With just Explorer I only saw my photos folder.
from root
ipod_control (dropping case here and forward)
(and presumably photos -- I did this very quickly)
under ipod_control
itunes
device
speakable
music
artwork
It seems likely that if you can locate the file(s) used for the built-in backgrounds, figure out what they are, and, if you can convert (or whatever's necessary) your own images to the right format, and replace theirs with yours, you could end up with your own background choices.
You'd obviously need to know what you're doing and take precautions in case something went wrong. Explorer in XP may show everything on the iPod (it did for the regular iPod a year or so ago), which makes things a lot easier than having to mess around with DOS. If you can get at the file system in UNIX (no idea what the OS on this thing is and no time to futz around atm), that would make seeing what's on the device pretty straightforward as well.
And, yes, I'd like my own images for backgrounds instead of denim or whatever the rest of the small set of built-in options are. Found these forums doing a search on the subject after I copied a number of images to the iPod only to find that they can't be used as additional backgrounds. Other than this, I'm pretty happy so far ... I only got it today, however, and it's my first iPod. Prior experience with them has been working on other people's.

There are some answers to questions/problems posted here...
Check settings/music:
You can change the volume limit (at least on mine (U.S.)).
You can turn on/off shake to shuffle.
I do agree, though, that the fact that you can't turn off the bloody thing is completely ridiculous! I love this thing, and will probably hang on to it, but the fact that I have to charge it as often as my smartphone is just plain stupid...

I think you can get a iPod Touch 4G. the screen of iPod nano 6 is too small and hard to use for me.

Apple won't have just left the camera out for no reason and everything else you don't like. They will use this as a selling point for the next iPod Nano, but with any look it won't be like the Nano 6th gen. In my opinion the 4th gen was the best, they really nailed it with that.

Blech. I don't like any of the stick ones. The form sucked! Not very pocketable and more easily snapped cause of length. The 3rd gen had a nice form (and seemed to have the best battery of hte three I've had, 3rd, 5th, and 6th). Fit in small pockets quite well. Honestly, if the 6th gen had as good a battery as the third gen, I would call it the perfect one. For those bitching the touch screen is too small, have you actually had one to use. It's very easy to use. And it is easier to find songs than the click wheel. It's quicker to go right to where you want on the ipod. And with the remote you don't miss having physical buttons on the times you need to not be able to look (in fact I preferred the remote to the click wheel buttons when I couldn't look at the ipod when I had the 5th gen. Quicker to figure out what I needed to do to FF, RW, stop, play).

Yeah, I see what you mean, I was more on about the aesthetics of the 4th gen.
