The company also plans to apply perpendicular recording to its ultra-small 0.85-inch drive, pushing push capacity to 6GB to 8GB per platter.

hmmm. . . is that the same drive that's used in the mini?

I might have this backwards, but I think regular iPods use Toshiba 1.8" drives, while the Mini uses Hitachi drives. Some rumors say an upcoming 5 GB Mini will use Seagate.

But Apple could use anything, in future.

With the 0.85" HDD we will either see a smaller mini form factor or same size form factor and larger battery means longer play time.

At present Apples uses the 1.0" HDD.

And since the present 1.0" is maxed at 5GB these new smaller HDDs will give us a 6-8GB mini with longer play time. :)

No. The mini uses a Hitachi 1" Microdrive (http://www.hitachigst.com/portal/site/hgst?MenuItemName=Microdrive). When the mini is updated to 5G (expected soon), it will be using a Seagate Microdrive (http://www.seagate.com/content/newsinfo/images/downloads/Seagate_ST1_CF.jpg). These microdrives use a Compact Flash form-factor, similar to the CF cards you often find used in cameras.

The Toshiba 0.85" drive (http://sdd.toshiba.com/cda/main.aspx?Path=8182000008e3000000010000659c00001d2a) is a completely different product. The size of one of these is about the same as an extra-thick SD card. So far, Apple is not using these in any devices.

And what if Toshiba decides to make 1'' drives with this new technology? That would mean having an iPod mini with something like 10GB of storage! ;)
