I'm not a current Apple TV owner so I'm hoping someone could help me out and tell me if my logic is flawed here...

I own a MBP. I have a small-ish collection of movies and shows mostly in .avi formats which all run perfectly on it. In Quicktime, if I file>save as and save them as a .mov, I can get them to organize and run in my iTunes library. Will I then be able to stream them via the new Apple TV to my big screen?

As far as audio goes, I'm assuming that anything I'm streaming fro my computer will run through the ATV to my home TV via the optical cable and come out whatever speakers I have connected to the TV?

I don't think that will work.. At least not very well.

I think that would work, at least reasonably well.

You would need to use the appletv preset to ensure the result would play on the appletv. It may well be worth seeing if new presets come when the new hardware is launched.

I hear handbrake may well squeeze a bit of extra quality out of these cross encodes for you.
