Every time I restart the computer, I get "the memory modules are installed in the..."

I get the message:
the memory modules are installed in the recommended slots

every time I restart my 2010 Mac Pro. I upgraded my memory with 3 x 2GB OWC memories. They are properly detected, and the system is working fine.

Anyway to get rid of that message?

Performed both of the steps, but it did not work... (I also did the repair disk permissions) Thank you though.

Try re-seating the RAM or popping out one of the sticks, startup/shutdown, put the stick back in and boot up? Just to try and flush out whatever is "stuck."

I installed OWC RAM, too, and got the message, but only once of course.

You should only get that message right after you install a RAM chip or remove a RAM chip, and boot the machine. When it senses a change in your RAM configuration, it will give you this message if they are installed correctly.

Well, I received my SSD in the mail today, so I did a clean install of OSX, and the problem went away. So that's one mystery that I'll never find the answer to.

Bumping because this is now happening to me....

I just upgraded to 12GB of OWC RAM, and at first power on I got the expected "The memory modules are installed in the recommended slots." I remembered reading this thread so I thought I would do a reboot and see what happens. Sure enough, I got the same message again. I shut down completely, restarted, and got the message again...

I have no intentions of reinstalling OSX like the OP did to fix the problem, so I wanted to reopen this thread to see if anyone had any solutions. I'll also shoot OWC an email to see if they have heard of this happening and get their input.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that when 10.6.5 is released the message will go away, similar to a new install of OSX. We'll see.

I'm the OP. Zerozal, did you move your home directory to a 2nd hard drive prior to putting in the new RAM?

I had a feeling that was causing the problem, but since I reinstalled my OSX and kept everything on the SSD, I can't confirm that is the cause. My hunch, although unlikely, is that there is some kind of permission settings causing OSX to not remember that it has displayed the new RAM installed message.

Reinstalling the OS takes < one hour.

Upgrading to 10.6.5 (when it's released) might not be a "complete" install of the OS and hence not fix the problem.

My normal account is NOT an admin account and doesn't have write permissions to my system drive. I logged out, logged back in as Admin and got the memory slot message. I logged out and logged back in as Admin again, and no message! Then I logged out and logged back in under my routine account, and voila! No message!

I believe what happens is that after the memory slot utility runs and confirms all is OK, it writes the new config somewhere on the system drive. Since I didn't have write permissions, it could never write the new config and so always thought that the new RAM configuration was, well, new. Logging in as Admin allows the file to be written and fixes the problem.

I am getting the same message after adding one stick of RAM to my MacPro. From reading these postings, it doesn't sound like the problem has been solved yet.

I even tried reinstalling the system then restoring from the Time Machine backup, the problem is still here. But maybe a clean reinstall will solve the problem?

It's been over a year since I've installed 3x4GB OWC sticks in my 8-core 2009 Mac Pro and after every restart I've gotten the same message from the Memory Slot Utility. I've done the whole resetting SMC, zapping PRAM, shifting the modules around with no success. However, I do notice whenever I boot into my Avid partition, I don't get the message. It's annoying, but I can live with it if the only alternative is a clean install(which is something I don't have the time to do).

I know its been nearly a year since this thread opened, but theres no easy solution here and it happens on Lion too.

So heres an easy easy easy fix that requires no deleting.

sudo chmod -x "/System/Library/CoreServices/Memory Slot Utility.app"

Run that in Terminal, and you remove its ability to launch, if you prefer the message


sudo chmod +x "/System/Library/CoreServices/Memory Slot Utility.app"
will restore its to its former messageness

After reading many posts about people having this problem, I decided to try a crack at this to see if I could fix it.

1) I enabled root access on my Mac (OSx Lion)

2) I logged off of my Admin account, logged in with root (click Other when login window appears and type root and the password you assigned). I got the memory is installed in the correct slots message, as usual.

3) I logged out of Root and logged back in with my usual admin ID. The message did NOT appear.

4) I shut down the system (powered it off), powered it back on, logged into my normal admin account (the one that was always getting the message), and like magic - No more memory message.

5) I went back in and disabled root (the opposite of enabling it in step #1) after the restart.

I did NOT have to fix permissions or reset anything. But, it seems that there must be some sort of permission thing going on if log gin in with Root fixed the problem.


I hope this helps others - this can be very irritating.

Just wanted to let everyone know that logging into root, as explained by bkomanet, WORKS!

Enabling the root user took me a few tries because you need to navigate to the top (apple) menu bar to get the "edit" pull down menu, giving you the enable/disable root options. It is not it's own window or a pop-up.

Just wanted to add to the overall knowledge of the board that this, in fact, does fix the issue.

It must be the preferences or similar file of the memory slot utility that don't have the right permissions for being saved.

I had the same problem on mine but I have two boot drives, one with Snow Leopard the other with Lion and it only occurs on Lion?

Strange, wil try the root login trick and report back.
