er i tend to only put the apps in that i use on a daily basis and i don't use that many so my docks not that large. For instance although i have fireworks i dont put it in the dock because i vastly prefer photoshop. I mean how hard is it to push command+shift+a?
Yes you do have a lovely large dock but i think someone might be able to beat you, hell i could beat you if i wanted! (but to be honest i can't be arsed to put loads of apps in the dock) But i am sure someone will trump you!
One thing though, do you put your dock on magnification? it really bugs me when you scroll through a mass of icons and they all pop up to be massive! i guess thats another reason why i try not to have too many icons in my dock. Whats it like if you have 20 images open in photoshop or something?!

Small dock, basically for my everyday apps that are constantly open. I use Quicksilver to launch apps and access my info - saves me from suffering from Dock envy! :p

Dec 19, 2004, 02:21 PM
That looks pretty excessive... I always viewed the dock as a 'seconday' way to launch apps, and only things that are used constantly go there... I think I would have a hard time finding what I wanted on your desktop...
On related question, is it possible to have more than one dock? On my Linux desktop (running KDE) I have to taskbars, one on the bottom and one on the right hand side. I find this enormously helpful. The bottom/standard taskbar has the "start" button, a 'show desktop' button, mozzila, and my mail app. the it goes to all the open application tiles, and on the right there's the system tray, virtual desktops, clock, and a handy dictionary application (I can't spell =p).
On the right hand taskbar I have all my secondary programs... media play, calc, IM, system configuration/Xkill, weather, etc. I find it enormously useful. I'll see of I can include a pic...
Anyways, could I do this on a Mac?

Sad thing is, I use these programs a lot. So yeah, I don't want to have to go searching through my HDD's just to find what I'm looking for. And yes I have magnification on, sometimes it gets in the way with other applications like Photoshop, Illustrator and what not, but yeah it works. I should get rid of LyX since I finally got my Microsoft Office to work. LyX just seems useless now and I have no need for it. I'll filter out my Dock. By the way, how well does Audium work? I'm questioning weather or not I should download it. MSN Messenger works ok, and I don't have very many other IM's I use except iChat, but I like iChat so yeah. Also, I see a few different programs in your guy's dock that I'm wondering what they are/do. Yeah...

I find having the applications folder in the dock is nice to get to all those applictaions that you use only occasionally. Click and hold and it works like the start menu in windows.
BTW, slooksterPSV, why do you have both mail and entourage in the dock? Do yu use both and what are the advantages to using both?

Even though I still dont have a mac, I dont see the point in having a small dock. People say it looks cleaner, but damit its to make it easier and quicker acces to your aps.
Just like how people dont have icons on the desktop... what the hell is the point of the desktop then, just a pretty picture?

Dec 20, 2004, 11:20 AM
Basically yeah. I just use my desktop for certain folders that I don't want to put on the HDD. Besides, a Desktop is for pictures, not for icons. I will put some, but if I don't have to put them there, I'll put them in my dock. A desktop, as I see, is only to access your HDD's and CDROM Drives. Other than that, I see people with such cluttered desktops, that it is just horrible.

I have everyday icons for mail, chat, itunes and firefox... but the majority of my project oriented programs (dreamweaver, ps, flash) reside in a shortcut folder that I have on my dock... then I just click and hold and i have the shortcuts available. I think there's a lot less clutter, but the shortcuts are still there.

I keep mine simple with my most used Apps. I put my Applications folder in my dock (blue sock) and just use it as a little programs menu.
I like to get a PC friend over and and launch my whole Applications folder and have like all 100 icons bouncing and then do an expose. You should see their jaw drop.

This thread has inspired me to clean off my desktop (I had a clutter of maybe 10 icons). I see the desktop as a work area, not area for starting programs. I drag images and text onto the desktop for future use, put files that I am currently working on there, downloaded files go there before being filed away. I don't even have my HD on the desktop (I am considering putting it back though), but removable media still shows up. If the desktop is cluttered, then I find the files that I am working with start getting bunched up and the start getting in each others way. Plus why start programs from the desktop where you have to hide all your current windows to get to them. That is what the dock is for.

I use almost everything weekly, except for HandBrake and some of the IM stuff. The internet applications, contact and calendaring applications, Photoshop and games I use daily. I switch between Freehand and Illustrator depending on the document since Freehand does multiple page documents and Illustrator doesn't. Freehand makes a mess of my Asian languages though, so I have to play games with Illustrator for anything Asian.
I took out a few things but the size of the icons hasn't increased. I'd probably have to take out half of the stuff for any significant change. I suppose I should just put the Graphics applications folder and the Developer applications folders in the Dock and it would save a lot of space. Plus, it would be more Windows-like. :D

Mine has firefox, safari, Adium, Address Book, iTunes, iPhoto, iCal, Acquisition, Terminal, Candybar, and X11. I can't see the point in having a huge dock really. The whole point of a dock is quick access to commonly used programs. For example, I use programs like Firestarter FX, Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player, and iMovie every now and then... but not often enough that I want them cluttering my dock. I just use finder to launch them.
p.s. the fact that you actually have RealONe player on your computer... disgusting

Just drop your Applications folder on your dock, right click and choose any app you want. Keeps the dock small, yet you can still access any app rather quickly.
I'll have to post a pick of my dock tonight. Mines at home

My dock is maybe medium in size, but it's only the things I use on a daily/semi-daily basis. To the right I keep alias folders of 'secondary apps', 'classic apps', 'administrative tools', and 'utilities', so I can get at anything from the dock.
Edit- I don't really agree with keeping frequently used items in a 'right-clickable' folder in the dock, because it definitely takes longer to get at. I do like it for secondary stuff though.

It's strange to me how so many people have their dock icons set at such a large size- no matter how many icons you've got in their, it's the vertical space that really matters to me- the space that gets wasted when you've got your dock set to 'big honkin icon' size. I keep a lot of items in my dock, but removing a lot of them wouldn't save me any screen real estate vertically. I do like to keep my icon size tiny- if you can't tell what the icon is at a really small size, it's not a very good icon.

How about setting the dock to the left or right instead of the bottom of the screen? That would gain vertical space, at the expense of horizontal space. Alternatively, you could turn on auto-hide for the Dock. There's a third option, too, which solves all of the problems you mention at once: set the dock size to its smallest, set magnification to its largest, and turn on auto-hide for the Dock.

Well because auto-hide is no good- it's not quick enough, and you can't really see what icon you're going for until it pops up- and using the left and right is no good for me because it's harder on both the eyes and the mouse to scan vertically instead of horizontally.
I don't have a problem, because my dock is tiny height-wise, I was just wondering about others who have such girthy docks.

Maybe a little magnification would help you see what icon you're going for while still keeping the Dock tiny and visible at all times when it's not being used - that is, unless you've turned it on already.

My work dock consists of 25 boring apps and four folders (Home, Documents, current project, and Applications). At home, I have only the daily and/or super-quick-access (Calculator) apps in the Dock, but I have an extra folder full of aliases for the applications I use frequently, but not all the time. A click-and-hold on tha folder, and I've got relatively quick access to the second-tier apps. Add the Apps folder for the rarely used ones, and everything's covered!

It's funny, especially with a widescreen monitor it would make WAY more sense to have the dock down the side of the screen, but for some reason I just seem to like it more on the bottom. There's less distance to cover on average, I suppose, though I really should try it on the right.
