This song was very popular around 1968. I keep thinking it was by the Troggs or Tommy James, but a search on iTunes yields nothing. The lyrics as best I can remember go like this.

"You told me what to say. Exactly what to say in that very special way. Oh it's true. I'm in love with you..."

The song is, "You Showed Me" by The Turtles, made in 1969.

You are correct. I couldn't get the tune out of my head. I think I heard it recently in a movie track.
