View Full Version : So what's the deal on flashing the 2009 MP?

Is it possible to flash them to accept the new processors and ram speed?

Please see my other thread on this. The upgrade requires a board swap and a new processor card with the new firmware. You need a board that supports B1 stepping to be able to accept Westmere (6-core 32nm chips). The 2009 Mac Pros are only for D0 stepping and won't take the new chips. There is no solution available for flashing the boards on the '09 models right now, you have to get new boards and install them yourself. Still, for the single processor model, it's cheaper to upgrade your 2009 with a 2010 board and processor than to buy a a new machine and sell your old one. Not so for the dual processor machines, the processors on those are just too damn pricey ($1600 a pop, you need 2 = $3200), and that's just for the chips. See my thread below:
