i have a 2006 quadra core Xeon MacPro and the ATI Radeon X1900XT card that came with it has gotten corrupted -lines appear across the screen and I cant upgrade the firmware. I am looking to buy a new video card , either a replacement of the same or preferably one that is more powerful, but dont know which upgrades will work . thanks for any info bearing on this subject

I upgraded my 2006 1,1 MP from X1900 (which is under-performance than X1900XT) to 5770 and it's a blast!
I can finally play Starcraft 2 and Civilization V at highest settings :)

4870 or 4890
To be fair, probably should not recommend 4890 unless we also make the readers aware that anything but an Apple branded card will likely require flashing. Flashing a video card may not be an option for everyone.
All that said, the Apple 4870 works perfectly well in a MacPro1,1 though it is expensive. I installed it on a 2006 MacPro without issues, and it provides vastly improved performance. It is also a lot quieter than the old 1900 I replaced. Others have reported that the Apple 5870 works in an older Mac Pro as well, but I have not tried this myself.
