I'm becoming just like my parents.

After a hard days' work, sometimes it's just nice to come home, fix a drink and put some mellow vibes on the stereo... also when relaxing with someone special, especially after a hot bath and a massage...

When I'm in that sort of mood it's stuff like:
Air
Zero7
Thievery Corporation
Nightmares on Wax
Nitin Sawheny
Morcheeba
Lemon Jelly
Groove Armada
Julee Cruise
Goldfrapp

And also: Boards of Canada, Miles Davis, Keith Jarrett, ambient stuff like Eno & Harold Budd, The Orb, LTJ Bukem, Portishead... amongst others.

Does anybody have any particular chill-out favourites to recommend from any genre? Music that just really unwinds you and creates a calm space?

I've got to tell you; you come up with the greatest questions! For me, just about anything by David Arkenstone works. Enya is another one of my favorites. Also, Acoustic Alchemy, Andreas Vollenweider, and Yanni (every now and again) are some others.

Enya is relaxing, but for me the album Lateralus by TOOL is by far the most diverse yet relaxing ablum, it can either chill me out, put me to sleep, or i can rock out to it

but besides music, some incense and a hot bath are nice, cuddling up to someone special is great, playing with each other's hair and just being together is prehaps the most 'chill' thing out there (yes i know i am a hopeless romantic)

Thanks. I'm usually just interested in creating a genuine dialogue based on common experience rather than using the forum as a soapbox...

...not that I haven't had the occasional rant from time to time. :)

Man with a Movie Camera: I have!

Like esp. The Awakening of a Woman (Burnout) and Drunken Tune but it's all good stuff...

I have "Everyday" (the 2nd album), and it has the song, "Man With a Movie Camera", except it's the original. The "Man With..." album came out afterwards, but I think it's probably better, not that Everyday isn't good.

Funny, I'm listening to Kings of Convenience (Riot On An Empty Street). I used to listen to several songs by Thievery Corp and Zero 7, but K of C is the best chillout group for me, even if their music isn't official "chillout" material.

For a general guide, listen to DI.fm Chillout in the iTunes radio section. Staggeringly good radio station.

I'm going to recommend a few good tracks though as well:

• Belfast and One Perfect Sunrise by Orbital.
• Les Nuits and Playtime (John McEntire Remix) by Nightmares on Wax
• The whole of the album Relax by Blank & Jones, notably the track Counting Clouds.
• The entire album Lifeforms by the Future Sound of London is dangerously ambient. Also a masterpiece.
• Michael Woods is a brilliant chillout remixer, especially his mixes of Madagascar by the Art of Trance and Peace by the Saints & Sinners.
• Chicane's albums Behind the Sun and (most notably) Far From the Maddening Crowd are great.
• The compilation Chilled Out Euphoria is immense, esp. CD2.
• Underworld have done many, notably Second Hand and Deep Arch. Consider investigating further, there's some gems to be had here.
• Vangelis.
• Aphex Twin verges from the sublime to the ridiculous, but I'd particularly recommend Alberto Balsalm, Flim, Bbydhyonchord, Petiatl Cx Htdui (real names :)) and Nanou 2.
• No chillout sesh is complete without Moments in Love by the Art of Noise.
• Jean Michel Jarre - Oxygène.
• Give DI.fm a long listen to find more. :)

Any use?

When it's time to chill, I usually queue up some Mike Oldfield (Hergest Ridge or Incantations generate a nice vibe). Some of the spacier Porcupine Tree tunes are always good, but then they always seem to sneak a little jam into every track. Also, In The Land Of Grey And Pink by Caravan always seems to mellow me out, even though it's not ambient of new age at all.
When I'm trying to decompress from a grueling day of prepress, I usually want to rock out very loud and hard - helps me vent and me get it out of my system. For that, some Manson, NIN, or almost anything that runs hard will suffice.

Personally I'm a great believer in the polar-emotives of musically enthused attitudes ... I listen to blues when I'm happy, thumping rock riffs during the cool drive home after work, and Frank Zappa when everything else just doesn't fit ..... but for 'chill-out' I normally pour myself a white russian and slip (as with stubeef) into Pink Floyd, or maybe late-60's Beatles, or post-Oasis cross-atlantic guitar rock ... or praps watch Glengarry Glen Ross on DVD.

Small window into my world there.

James Taylor is always soothing to me because it's what my parents always played and it brings back a nice nostalgia from my childhood. Cat Stevens, Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell and Simon and Garfunkel are also included in that mix.

Oddly enough, I can remember hating all of those artists as a teenager. Somewhere between the ages of 13 and 15 or so I went through a phase of Paula Abdul, Janet Jackson and all that sort of rubbish.... pretty ghastly, but also probably typical of a pre-teen female trying to fit in with her friends' tastes. Then as I grew up I went back to my "roots" and started to appreciate the good music my folks listened to and embraced it as my own favorite music.

Pretty cool idea this - chill out music. I listen to a lot of Massive Attack and DJ Shadow like some of the other posts mentioned, but also some Portishead and Sneaker Pimps. I've got a shaky heart beat and the doctor actually said that I should listen to this sort of stuff when it starts racing. Studies have apparently shown (and I can believe them) that chilled music will dramatically slow down the heart. :)

Ahh, fond memories of before I worked at a company with a rigidly enforced, randomly tested drug policy.

I was chilling to the CD Brave by Marillion last night. Some parts are on the rock side, but mostly it is an absolutely beautiful stretch of music. A fattie would have been quite nice accompaniment.;)

Just found out that Zero7 have a new album out in a couple of weeks time in the UK (May 22nd), at least — The Garden.

Along with Nightmares On Wax's: In a Space Outta Sound it probably will be the soundtrack to a number of warm evenings outdoors with a cold glass of something in hand.

Another little gem recently acquired and also highly recommended is:

I love IDM, chill out, drum n bass, etc...

I find that chill out music is best when there are little to no words. I listen to somafm on itunes all day at work, prefer 'cliqhop'.

My list [some matching previous posts]:

* Orb [I'm willing to argue the Kings of Chillout], favorite album is too difficult, 'Blue Room' EP is good chill out, Orbus Terrarum is pretty excellent, and 'Little Fluffy Clouds' was my introduction to 'electronic music' and will always hold a special place in my heart. <<'Toxygene' is a great driving song>>

* Boards of Canada are Gods in my book
* Any 'Trip-Hop', Morcheeba, Massive Attack, Portishead, Tricky, etc..
* Any Classical with Strings, Personal favorite is the 20 disc Complete Hayden Strings Collection.
* Most Jazz from the 'classical era', Coltrane, Mingus, Davis, Monk, etc...

Some new suggestions:

* Oval
* Pole
* V. Delay
* Autechre
* Plastikman / a.k.a. Richie Hawtin
* We

I know Moby gets a hard time round these ways... but I think he's a f**kin' genius. ;)

May I suggest his 'Hotel - Ambient' album ;) I also suggest going up the Malvern Hills to the very top, lie on the bonnet, with 'Snowball' playing softly in the background, whilst staring up at a crystal clear night sky, it'll expand your mind in ways you never thought possible. ;)

I will add Track #2 (Secret of Forest) from this album (http://www.rpgfan.com/soundtracks/ctbot/index.html), and I submit most of Peter Gabriel's Digging in The Dirt as well. I will also second recommendations of Miles Davis, as long as it's pre-Bitch's Brew (I'm not knocking it, but I wouldn't say fusion helps me chill out,) and Massive Attack (Mezzanine at least).

Somebody else mentioned that you start good threads, and I agree.

As for my mellow music...I listen to Brahms & Motzart if I feel like reading something (lyrics tend to distract me from the whole reading thing). But if it's just the music, the labrador, and a good beer...

Rhett Miller (& The Old 97's) -- Scrubs introducted me to this one --
Pat McGee Band
Jim Croce
Jackson Browne
The Band
Bob Dylan
U2
The Coral -- Scrubs again --
Simon & Garfunkel
Tom Petty

The best environment for this is a rainy spring morning. Man get I get relaxed under those conditions, to quote a good commerical: I reach a zen-like state the depth of which makes Ghandi look aggressive.

Top three frosty recommendations of the day:

1) Jon Hopkins — Contact Note... if you like Moby-esque downtempo stuff, then this is right up your street. Eno's a fan, allegedly.

2) Sounds from the Verve Hi-Fi — Thievery Corporation... sublime bossa-novas and silky voices, saxes and vibes from the Verve collection. Top-notch lounging for when you're in your silk pyjamas.

3) The Afterlife Lounge — Afterlife... dubby balearic latin lounge with strong list of collaborators and impeccable production. Make mine a Tom Collins.

Very chill.

I know this won't fit everybody's tastes but Ladytron's Light & Magic (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:q690s37wa3vg) album is pretty chill. So is anything by Nightmares on Wax, especially their Carboot Soul (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:xe3ibks90akx)album. Also, if I need to unwind, I can always pop in Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.

...and last but not least Royksopp's electronic cool down album Melody A.M. (http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&token=&sql=10:fh6gtq8zpu48) always hits the spot.

Vangelis-ish but with beats, like a warm BoC but more synthetic-like and Cocteausish, very melodic. Think I might prefer the follow-up A Strangely Isolated Place a little more (just finished playing — it's stunning) but that's just on the evidence of one play of each.

Music that just really unwinds you and creates a calm space?

if ur a fan of all of them youll love this lot-theres 8 free tracks to download from myspace.

...Moby's Hotel Ambient album.

OK. Had my mitts on it now for a week or so and yes. Lovely, and yes worth every penny, especially worth it as copies of the double-set can now be had for a fiver. Although thoughts of the Bowie Berlin trilogy are not far behind. ;)

Am now in a Quantic, David Sylvian, Fila Brazillia, Thievery, Jarrett phase... as well as some old-skool techno, Salt Tank et al.

On order: some Burt Bacharach and Mancini. :o

...for mixing, that is. :D

New comments on an old thread? Sure, why not. I'm probably not dropping names that havent already been dropped, but heres my input.

Cant go wrong with some tunes from

Parlsey Sound
DJ Krush (especially Meiso or Ki-Oku)
Jon Kennedy
Funki Porcini (especially Head Phone Sex)
Hird
The Herbaliser
Nujabes/Fat Jon
Massive Attack
Doves
A Guy Called Gerald
Smith & Mighty

just a brief list of whats been getting rotation here. I am a huge Mo Wax/!K7 records fan, cant really go wrong there. The ESL catalogue is quite nice, too. I've been listening to some DJ Cam and 3582/J. Rawls stuff as well lately. The Blue Note Breaks series has some seriously ace cuts on it as well. If you like the Bossa sound, look into Astrud Gilberto, too. Blue Note also has some Brazilian beats album that is really good. Giles Peterson has some fantasticly eclectic compiliation/mix albums out that cover a good cross section of fantastic sounds. If you dig the old school breaks/jungle scene, I highly recommend the old Metalheadz Platinum Breakz albums or Good Looking Records' Points in Time series or the Earth Series by LTJ Bukem. Overall a solid bunch of tunes that are designed to chill.

Kruder & Dorfmeister's, The K&D Sessions is my all time favorite chill-out album. I highly recommend it for decompression.

Along the lines of BOC ... check out some local artists here at TwinDefect (http://twindefect.org/). Be sure to DL Pat Benolkin's mixes (pushing an hour each). They are a half step above chill, but Shayps album is on the money. All free DLs of course (artwork included). :)

Oh, and the Darkel album (JB Dunckel of AIR) is downright dope. :)

Thanks for the heads-up; immediately added to my wishlist.

Be sure to look out for the bundled promo CD (Stay/BunnyGirl). Love that Bunny Girl song. :) It's promo only (NFS) ... i'm not sure what rules apply about sharing such CDs. Let me know if you can't find it.
_

Others I forgot to mention: Telefon Tel Aviv (Fahrenheit Fair Enough being the more chill album), Urchin, Slowdeck (Multiple Offenses), Bitter Sweet (if you like Supreme Beings of Leisure), and of course Jamie Lidell's Multiply is fantastic (Super Collider's Head On as a darker alternative).

Another good mix CD (though darker and more electronic) is MAS: Confusion.

Crap ... and how could i forget Tricky's Maxinquaye? :o ... i'm sure i'm missing and withholding more than I realize. It's hard to know how dark or beat heavy you can go before you start spilling the bath water. :p

µ-ziq, Bassnectar, U.N.K.L.E, Dj Shadow, DJ. Spooky, Gel-Sol, Themselves, Subtle, Beck ... iTunes radio: Soma FM (GrooveSalad/cliqhop) and Jazzmusique.

I'd better stop now.

I chill to the Lateralus album from Tool and Some of their 10000 days songs.

Tool is the most amazing band I ever heard, have all their albums... it's just a journey to listen to any album they made...

I have it...it's good. Not as good as Talkie Walkie or Moon Safari, but better than 10,000Hz Legend and The Virgin Suicides.

...I should say that I've only listened to it once all the way through so that could just be my knee-jerk reaction. I need to give it a few more listens before I make any kind of final decision. Track 1, "Space Maker," is _excellent_, however.

something i've been digging on again for chill out music, even though technically they are "rock" of some form, are Team Sleep (Deftone's front man, Chino Moreno's band), and the band, Curve (female lead singer, not sure of her name, but she's really really good).

outside of that, i recently revisited some of my older less listened to downtempo style of music, and re discovered naked funk, kruder and dorfmeister's "k&d sessions", and i'm digging on the massive attack's danny the dog.

Aside from having a wonderfully futurist cover, it's such a good album.

Japan - Quiet Life (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=187622391&id=187622342&s=143444)

Somewhat oddly, but it appears that all the best new electronic music is French. Recent purchases include;

Marsmobil - Une Affaire Demode Et De Musique (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=253293870&id=253290384&s=143444).

Sebastien Tellier - Sexuality... it's so smooth sounding, it makes me want to hump things, anythings. (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?i=273226491&id=273226489&s=143444)

And perhaps the most '80's sounding thing since your Speak & Spell stuttered its final words...

Finally got around to listening to Chet Baker. Very nice music.
Lately, I've been listening to Boards Of Canada and Trentemøller a lot, definitely recommended as well.
