I have been reading this forum for months now and keeping an eye on any problems the imac has been encountering.
Personally, I would never buy a first generation of any technology. So I eagerly awaited the second gen of this imac to see what had changed.
Luckily for me I will not be in any financial position to buy an imac until at least March, 2011 as I want a BTO 27 inch 2.93ghz (top of the line).

I do have a wish list (of sorts)
I am happy with almost everything except I want USB 3.0 and an extra firewire 800 port, esata II and an HDMI port would be nice but not essential. This, for me would be future proofing it just that extra little bit.
If in the next refresh these are included I will be one very happy chappy indeed.

On saying that, if in the next refresh, which I'm hoping will be before March next year, doesn't include USB 3.0 an extra firewire 800 or HDMI it will not be a deal breaker for me anyway.

I just hope that the long wait I have endured so far ends with having the updates I have listed above.

I have always been a Windows user up 'til now and I have researched every tutorial I can find about apple OS X. To the point where almost feel like I'm using it now, I just don't have my imac yet...LOL.

And then a year later something else will come out that will put yours to shame. The wait game isn't with it.

the waiting game

Oh, I know what your saying! If I had the money right now I would have purchased the current 27 inch 2.93, no doubt about it!

No matter which imac I get it will be superseded in the next refresh. Technology moves so fast, eh?

I'm just hoping that by the time March, 2011 rocks around the 3rd refresh would have happened and I might, if I'm lucky, get at least one of my wish listings granted. Either way, even if nothing really substantial happens before then I will still get the imac regardless of any upgrades.

Cheers

I just put my order in online today for the 27 inch i7 2.93ghz with 2 TB internal hard drive.

I am very excited as this will be my 2nd iMac and I am selling off my 24 inch 2008 model.

I am not to worried about what's coming out in 2011. I want one now!

I got a Brand New i7 4 weeks ago and it's perfect.
Honestly I was worried too but am glad I got it.
The majority are probably good but you won't hear about these here.

Rav:)

I seriously doubt USB3 is coming – Intel is more or less stunting its growth. doubtful about eSATA, too...it's been out for ages and Apple still hasn't put it in, so why would they next time?

HDMI I guess is more or less a sure thing, since the mini got it.

Congratulations Rav! It's good to hear people who have received a perfect imac and have taken the time to post. Maybe we can even up the good posts vs the bad ones and get a more realistic view of what people are actually getting.

Cheers

Toxic,
You make some interesting points. I too have a lot doubts about my wish list. I do hope you're right about the HDMI though.
Although Toxic, OWC can install a esata after market. So I am assuming all the architecture is in the imac it's just a matter creating a port. Am I right?

For the life of me, I cannot figure out why Apple has refused to put an eSATA port in the iMac.

Honestly, I was thinking the same thing, that I would wait for USB3 before I buy an iMac in order to "future-proof it."

But the real reason I was waiting with an iMac was because I wanted an internal SSD drive and a decent graphics card. This iteration of iMac has what it takes to be considered powerful for at least two years. That's good enough for me, and then I can sell this thing and upgrade to a new iMac.

I bought an iMac 27" I3 from BestBuy (love the rewards points) and can honestly say the only "problem" I have had is that I park my butt in front of it for way too long. Absolutely 100% what I expected and have no issues with screen glare, yellowing or dead pixels. This thing is a major beast compared to either my old G4 dual 867 or my former Dell P4 3Ghz. :apple:

Hi!

I am probably getting either the Imac 27 inch I3 or I5 model from Best Buy and would like to know if you have any noise issues coming from the hardrive on your computer.

I was in a Best Buy store recently and the Apple computer specialist who works for Best Buy checked to see who the manufacturer of the harddrive was, as he was telling me that it is fairly noisy and it turned out that it was a Seagate harddrive with the serial or model number ending with a s (which according to the threads I have read here are known to have a noisy harddrive).

I am a little hesitant about buying the 27 inch Imac model from Best Buy, if it has the noisy seagate model ending in an s, so I would appreciate it if you could let know if your computer has any noise issues coming from the harddrive.

Thanks. :)

Chevy,
I am interested in the mini DP to HDMI adapter you posted about. Would that only allow for video and not audio? Can you elaborate please?

I just received my new iMac i7 yesterday evening from Fed Ex. I will need advice on how to post pictures here.

I checked for Yellow tint screen issue and from what I can tell using the Yellow Tint guide here in the forums I am pretty sure that my machine is just fine. But I could be wrong. I just can't see it. Everything is white or whitish grey. My machine was build to order so it wasn't one from the Apple store or anything.

So I would recommend buying one up. My model has just about everything I need. I love the 2 Terabyte internal hard drive. :)'

Specs: 2.93 ghz, 2 TB HD, Ati 5750 graphics card, 4 gigs of ram.

I am going to go with 8 gigs of ram in a few months. 4 gigs is plenty at this time.

As long as you buy a Mini DisplayPort Adapter to HDMI cable that has USB Audio. You can get video and audio through the HDMI

I have one of these on my First Gen iMac 27" It works great with my 42" HDTV

Forums and mailing lists always have a high ratio of problems because almost no one posts "Six o'clock and all is well". As long as you wait six to eight weeks after a new model comes out, because sometimes there are some early manufacturing glitches, you'll be fine.

Waiting for the next release--other than for financial reasons--will just add a number of "wanna haves" that that release won't include.

If e-SATA and extra firewire ports are really needed, then you should be looking at a Mac Pro rather than an iMac. The iMac has a more restricted I/O hub and so adding an e-SATA is likely to slow the iMac down to below acceptable performance levels. Computing speed is not all about the processor, it's about the overall throughput of the processor plus subsystems. Two computers that have exactly the same processor can have vastly different speeds because even the fastest possible processor will just sit and spin if it has to wait for the data to arrive.

........

Not if there is a hardware design or QC problem.

The only time i can hear any hard drive noise is late night early morning when everything in the house is off except my iMac and i am sitting there using it. Very soft and minor sounds. Even though i really hate Seagate drives, this one is very quiet.
