Y'know, I actually first heard about this story on MSNBC's news page today. Slightly ironic I guess.
Anyways, I do think this opens up a huge hole for Apple with iTunes as the jukebox and with iTunes you must hve QT, so . . . I don't see this elping anyone else really though because nothing else ships standard on machines (thank you HP, I guess Apple made this deal with you knowing where it was going to go)
In a look at the past what happened with the M$ case int he U.S.? I remember the justice department had them nailed, Bush took office, then things kinda got quiet. Anyone want to help fill me in?

the prevalence of Windows Media format files already in circulation means users will have no choice but to install the Microsoft player
right, windows media player is of course the only media player that can handle wmv. cough VLC cough bsplayer, global divx player.
a fair few players handle .wmv.

M$ basically bought Bush/administration who's souls all combined wouldn't fill a thimble made for a flea. Money talks, especially to rich scum that have never worked a day in their lives and are out-of-touch to the common man with their large evil corporate narrow minded agendas, hence Gates and Bush are a match made in hell that would probably make even Satan himself wince.

Thank you, that was most helpful. However I somehow got the sneaking suspision Gates is a Democrat. Not sure why, prob just real moderate Democrat.

I'm not sure how Gates personally votes/contributes. (Most big corporations will pay anybody--and the Democrats can surely be bought too!) But the Clinton DOJ was going after MS, and Bush's DOJ let them off the hook. In fact one of the first remedies the DOJ permitted (until states objected) was that MS would have to give Windows computers to schools. Which of course would actually HELP keep Windows dominant--those schools would have no choice but Windows (or turning down big donations). Now, I believe, that particular remedy has been changed so MS simply gives schools the money, but the schools are allowed to choose platforms other than Windows.
During the case, there was press about MS just needing to stall until a Republican administration could take over the case. That turned out to be just what happened, sadly.

All your posts explain many mysteries regarding Microsoft, Apple, and their relation to the world of politics. I'm glad to have been enlightened, and I can use the information to encourage more people to switch :D

"Liberal" M$ users to Mac or Mac users to the Democratic party? You're in Ohio so I'll take both. :D

I meant M$ users to Mac. I'm no good at convincing people to switch political parties.

Weird since I've heard Bush and Rush are Mac users. About the only thing I like about them (Political thread, here we come). M$ however gave quite a bit to the Republicans, and Apple to the Democrats. And Gore is a board member at Apple.
As with everything, it's not as simple as Libs and Cons or M$ and Apple. A lot of it involved money, but it's pretty complicated. Weird though that it all went away under the Bush administration, wonder how far Gore would have taken it. He might have dropped it too, but after Clinton's people went through all the trouble, you'd think he would have carried on with what they already had.
You know, like that other thing Bush's people joked about Clinton's people being obsessed with, but then it turned out to be a big deal after all. ;)

Whats with the politics? It s Christmas, so we should be concentrating on religion!
It made me laugh how MS say the revelation of intellectual property rights will stifle innovation. I think they fail to mention that it is only when you run a monopolistic restrictive policy that you open yourself up to such draconian inspection. I dont suppose anyone anywhere could make a case for Apple handing over all the goodies on OSX - until they own 97% of the whole PC market and are found guilty of shutting everyone out who doesnt suit their purpose.
