View Full Version : How to ensure ssd is performing correctly?

how do you fellow applers check its performing well? i ran xbench and my highest speed was on a sequential uncached read at 180.81 MB/sec (256k blocks)

is that about right? i thought these ran around the 200 mark?

my lowest mark was for another uncached read and came in at 29.85MB/sec (4k blocks)

sorry if this seems stupid, but im new to the world of ssd's and want to check its performing as it should be!

Hard to say because you didn't tell what SSD you have. Some have only 200MB/s speeds while others can have nearly 300MB/s

Oops sorry :o

It's an ocz vertex 2 there were other results mostly along the 100mb/sec

I thought those were supposed to get up around 280, same as OWC SSDs. I just tested my OWC SSD and only got 240 for read and write.

this is whats concerning me!

i know its relative but people describe the performance as wow!

and im not experiencing that here. its better but not by tons

What size SSD did you get? Often, the smaller SSD's are a bit slower than their big brothers.

its a 60gb ocz vertex 2 which im sure said on the box 220/250mb/sec.

its a shame there not a diagnostic or something which tests it.

its also runing the latest firmware which came out in july or august this year i think

JMO, but that's a "smaller" SSD so perhaps the speed #'s you're seeing are normal.

Here's the results on my 60gb OWC SSD:

Sequential Uncached Read of 256k blocks: 197.33 MB

And to compare, here's a VelociRaptor 150gb

Thanks Sean!

That looks almost identical to what mine did :)

I thought they'd be a little faster but I guess the figures are up to rather than sustained

OCZ Vertex 2 240GB vs. WD Caviar Black 1TB (stock Mac Pro HD)
specs from OCZ:
Max Read 285MB/s
Max Write 275MB/s
Sustained Write 250MB/s
not quite there...

I like those raid0 speeds!

I would take other peoples advice here and use Aja System Test. xBench has time and time again proven to be an unreliable source for SSD benchmarks (bunch of threads on it if you search)

thanks!

well i ran it and:

I/O Transactions
Frame MB/sec
Read Write
00.0 262.3 251.0
01.0 262.9 250.1
02.0 261.5 252.6
03.0 261.3 256.7
04.0 264.7 256.6
05.0 251.0 257.1
06.0 253.0 256.6
07.0 236.6 256.6
08.0 263.7 249.3

this is only a fraction of the text it said but its all quite close.

seems to be a bit healthier!
