Which Mac, there are quite a few different models that have been produced since the mid 1980s.
Some can use internal CD/DVD drives, some can't, and some require slot loading drives.

You really should try the documentation for your machine, it's available at http://www.info.apple.com/installparts if you can't find it anymore.

Accelerate Your Mac (http://www.xlr8yourmac.com/) has some info on it as well. They have a drive compatibility database, too. Just put in your model and what you want to use, and it will give you reports from other users. Though it's pretty easy. Just take the cover off, unscrew the old drive, pull it out, stick in the new one. Most of your standard drives will work, but some require a program like Patchburn for iLife compatibility.
