Most silent 2TB HDD?

Hi,

I am looking for a 2TB HDD to add to my 3rd and 4th bay. They will be used for storage and backup only and need to be as silent as possible. I was looking at the 2TB caviar green. Is this a good choice? Is it a lot less noisy compared to a caviar black or blue?

Excellent choice. I've got two of them in my Pro and I can't hear them at all (well I can't hear any of my Green drives to be specific). They replaced 2 1TB Black drives which drove me nuts because of the noise. They were the loudest part of the whole computer.

Same here. I got two 2TB Caviar Blacks which get annoying when music isn't on that are backed up to two 2TB Caviar Greens and I never hear them. They are a really good price too!

Well, gee, my 1TB Caviar Blacks are basically silent compared to a Hitachi 2TB drive I just put in: that Hitachi is LOUD.

I have both a couple WD Caviar Greens and Seagate Barracuda LPs; both are pretty quiet. I find the Seagates are a bit faster.

If you want quiet HDs, then WD Caviar Green, Seagate Barracuda LP or Samsung EcoGreen is your best choice. WD and Samsung are 5400rpm while Seagate is 5900rpm.

Caviar Green is a great choice

No! Do a search on that drive and RAID 0 and you'll find the reason why.

Caviar Greens aren't very RAID friendly. As you're using them as backup and storage, you're better off without RAID as if one drive fails, all your data is lost.

As I mentioned earlier I've got two WD20EARS in my Mac Pro in a software RAID 0.
Running for 6 month now without any problem whatsoever.
The noise level doesn't change at all, why should it?

The hard drives in my Pro run constantly as I unchecked the option to let the system sleep hard drives after some time. It's a bummer to wait for hard drives to spin up (creates a beach ball).

Recently WD chose to disable the option to enable TLER in the newer versions of the Greens, which might result that the (hardware) RAID controller drops the drive. With the old Green drives this wasn't a problem (WD20EADS) but in a software RAID you're fine even without TLER.
As I said, no problem whatsoever.
