I have a 17inch G4imac with maxed ram at the moment i can not seem to burn a successful DVD. I have managed to use idvd to do video dvds in the past but now i am unable to burn a simple data DVD with the finder. I try to burn about 4 gigs worth of filesat 4 different speeds with 2 different types of disks but cannot seem to get it to work. Everytime i get the buffer underrun error code(took some research on my part to find that out) Any work arounds? Apple as usually would like 50 dollars to fix help me out and frankly i don't think it is a 50 dollar problem. Any input would be appreciated

What brands of media (and what speed are they rated for) have you tried?

Unless you got your iMac in September, you should be within your 90 days of free telephone support. Call AppleCare and find out what the deal is.

In this case the 1-year hardware warranty may apply because you suspect it may be a bad drive. You can sort of approach it from that angle when you call. If you get your call escalated to a product specialist they'll likely send you a new optical drive to install yourself, but you can insist that they send someone out to fix it for you instead because that's also your right.

Apple Call Support is for 90 days, the warranty on the hardware is 1 year, if he knows a certified Apple Tech in his area all he has to do is either call them for Free or take it in and it will be fixed since its something that he didn't do it was a defective Optical Drive. :)

i had the exact same problem with the exact same computer and maxed out ram and such. the only way i can burn dvds is by restarting the computer and then opening nothing but toast and just burining the dvd, it really sucks... alot. and then i realised that i hada 4x burner, so not it only takes me 13 minutes to burn, which is good, becuase before i had to wait a whole hour before i could use my computer again.

anywase i hope that helps. if it doesnt work it might be becuase of iDVD, maybe taking too much ram or the system, try exporting your idvd file as an image and burning it in toast.. to do that ur gonna need this hack program. im not at my normal comp so i forget what it is. search these forums though for image + idvd or pfurz becuasei think thats what it was called, either way good luck
