I am thinking of buying some movies. Is there a big difference between HD and normal movies? I will watch them on my external display monitor (1600x900) which is connected to my 13" MBP. However, in the future, I would perhaps like to buy a new television and have something which can run iTunes hooked up to it, like perhaps an Apple tv? So I want to start building up a collection now. Any tips?

iTunes HD encodes are all 720p resolution meaning 1280x720 in size (height may be different due to removal of black bars/area), whereas iTunes SD encodes are 640x480 in resolution/size (some may be a bit larger due to anamorphic settings).

Your better off with the HD versions. Also it comes with a SD version, so you get both. Buy one HD film like Iron man 2 or something and see the difference yourself, to see if it is worth it. On a bigger screen it will definitely be worth the extra pixelage.
