I didn't bother contacting them, but I'm sure many have.
Odd. Free DD is still not working after 8 pm EDT Friday! (Maybe if I had 6.0.1?)
Even if you click fresh from the iTMS home it's listed as .99.
(Message is now back to "Cart's contents have changed." Followed by a note I've seen a few times: "There was an error in the Music Store. Please try again later.")
You'd think one file would be easy to fix, even if they underlying cause that makes this happen so often is trickier.
(EDIT: I did send a message, FWIW.)

They aren't DRMed either.
Looks like they may have more stuff too.
Stanford on iTunes (http://itunes.stanford.edu/)
News Link (http://news-service.stanford.edu/news/2005/october26/itunes-102605.html)
This could become huge if more universities take part. Remember how iPods were being used to store lectures and class materials? Now you could get them from iTunes.

Has anyone gotten the Haley Westenra DD to work? I wonder if the issue is universal or not?
Still can't be downloaded as of Sunday night. One more day and then it will be gone anyway--which adds some humor to the following message I got back from Apple :)
Thank you for contacting the iTunes Music Store.
We take the quality of our products very seriously and we will be investigating the issue you reported in depth.
Please do not attempt to download this title again within the next two weeks. This will give us time to resolve the issue with the title or remove it if we need to.
We hope that you continue to enjoy purchasing music from the iTunes Music Store.

The "FREE Discovery Download" for this week still bears a $0.99 price
tag. Will this be corrected before next week's update?
Thank you for contacting the iTunes Music Store.
Sorry about the completely inaccurate and off-topic reply to your email.
And we're also sorry you have been unable to get this week's free download. This is an error on our end, and we are actively working on correcting the problem. We do not know when, or if, this song will be available to be downloaded for free. Thank you for your time and patience.
Sincerely,

New songs for the week - the Discovery Download appears to still be catalogued incorrectly in the store because currently it's listed as $0.99 on the main link from the front page, but the direct link shows it as free.

The Hayley Westenra DD still won't work, and now it may never, although I'll keep "trying again later" as the message states.
But I do NOT think it's universal: there would be more complaints in this thread, and some of the reviews mention that they tried the free download. So I think only a few of us were blocked from the DD. But if someone posts that they DID get it, that would answer that.
darien - at least that message actually makes SENSE for the issue :)

You can gift the free songs by going to the album page. Could someone with iTunes 6 please send a gift of one of the free songs to betbest1 AT hotmail DOT com so I can get an iTMS account without a credit card or a gift certificate?
EDIT: Interesting...almost all iTunes store links are on phobos.apple.com and the Stanford link is on deimos.apple.com. (For those who do not know astronomy, those are the names of the two moons of the planet Mars.)

Is it unusual for previous free downloads to disappear from the store? For instance, the free version of "Telescope Eyes" by Eisley disappeared, along with the entire EP it was on, "Laughing City."
And Ellie Lawson, who had a free track one week called "Gotta Get Up From Here," has disappeared entirely.
I thought one of the cool things about the iTMS is that, without the physical contraints of shelf space, they can let songs just sit on their servers. Guess that's not always true...
EDIT: Never mind. I figured out that the artists (and their record labels) can pull their songs off of iTMS. In the case of Ellie Lawson, she's exclusive to Barnes & Noble stores. Bizarre.

That's pretty cool. The nice thing is that the music is varied - there is something that fits every taste. Plus the lectures...WOW! This is all the more meaningful coming from someone who doesn't even like Stanford.

What I want to see more of is those free "sampler" tracks where bits of different songs are stitched together to make one track that's a sneak peak at a whole album, usually with a little talking added to the beginning. I like those.*
Nu: The Sounds of New Scandinavia, Vol.6 (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=89781919) is out
but no free songs content:(
That's too bad! I hope that changes. I liked the other "Nu" Volvo freebies.
Oddly enough, right now it looks like the Vol. 2 and Vol. 4 songs are still free... but not 1, 3, or 5. (Or 6. Yet?)
* NOT.

Seems kinda strange that she would say the song is free when it isn't...
[edit]
okay, something is definitely odd. Right after Tear You Apart, Roxy also states that All I Want For Christmas (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewAlbum?playlistId=102487513&s=143441&i=102487452) by Dirty Boyz is also free and after looking at it and finding it wasn't, I was double checking the front page and saw a banner for a Behind The Scenes (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewTVEpisode?id=110699556&selectedItemId=110699556&s=143441) video of Battlestar Galactica with a "Free" label on it's corner. A world-weary request in "All I Want for Christmas":Dear Santa,

Can you make them two felonies

Comments about gifts that Goyim (non-Jewish people) get in "Goyim Friends":Like snowboards, cell phones, paintball guns, and iPods.

It appears that Apple considers the Single of the Week released last Friday to be this week's free tune.
That explains why there were two Discovery Downloads last Friday: one was for last week and one was for this week. But only one Single of the Week for the two week period?
Wouldn't you like to see an interview with the people who run this giveaway to ask them about the inconsistencies?

I think they're taking the holiday week off. Roxy said so at the end of the iTunes New Music Tuesday podcast.

I just downloaded all episodes of the official Mercedes-Benz Podcast (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=101560972). It is an all music podcast, and i find it is really good:)
At least better than the the Volvo tracks and most iTunes weekly free singles:D

Any idea why it doesn’t show up in a store search?
Too bad I don’t know German. Is there an English version?

Isn't it time for a new thread? "Free iTunes 2006" or something?

It does appear in search!!
I don't know German, too. But who care? I only care about the music! It's good, and that's enough.
No English version by far.
PS: I also found official BMW Podcast: Podcast from BMW (http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=80489947). It is an English podcast but a talking one. I don't like it.

Thread cross-reference: one free song from 7 digital, m4a format.
The free song is "Always Too Late" by Annie.
Thanks, KKKL.Forgot that I already had this. Thanks for the reminder of sorts.

It does now, that’s weird. When I searched earlier, all I got was the CarTV video podcast (vidcast? vodcast? vlog?).

This week's tracks are up earlier than I expected. One of them is the Haley Westerna track that never became free. The other one is Si*Se - More Shine

Time for a new 2006 thread.
EDIT: FYI These tracks and an album I bought at the same time required iTunes 6 to download.

And now it doesn’t again. Argh. Typical iTunes search. A search for Mercedes-Benz returns no results, not even that CarTV vidcast.
Fine. I’ll go build my own podcast. With blackjack, and hookers. In fact, forget the podcast and blackjack. Eh, screw the whole thing.
