*Spymac will be taking a Standard percentage (3%) to cover the costs of documentation and handling.
I'm speechless. I know it's a small percentage, but I cannot believe that they are charging people to make donations via them, when there are so many other options where ALL the money will get to the people who need it.

I have great faith in SpyMac, and fully expect that they will sink to even newer lows. http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=19550

Even if you look at some donation programs run by major business, 3% is still quite low. Some of them are so poorly run that they may only have 3% getting to the people that need it.

If you donate directly to the organizations involved (Red Cross etc) I can't imagine they'll be taking a cut...can they??

They live off of the donations themselves. It may be called Administative costs or something else but they take a cut for themselves. I think 15% is about average.

Good thing too. All those 3% mount up. I really hope most are donating direct rather than through Spymac or others like them (taking a cut).

Of course, but these are true operational costs. Not the same thing as taking a cut for doing nothing other than being a middle man.

I was just shopping on Amazon and they had a disaster relief banner on their front page with the assurance that 100% of the donation would go to the Red Cross. So I guess it isn't unreasonable to assume that it could be done by Spymac, now is it??

I nearly joined them instead of Macrumors but I think I made the right choice; they are way too bloated with commercialism - although I do like the little script signature under everybody's avatar. How do they do that, I wonder?

That's really too bad. Is there some reason I'm not aware of that they can't send 100%? I can't imagine why anyone would not donate directly after learning that.

I hate Spymac. They aut' to be ashamed of themselves for doing this. They're going to charge for documentation when anyone can go there and post pictures for free. They definitely have the wrong priorities.

Some of that may be Paypal fees, but even then they can screw themselves. I knew they sucked, but that's pretty bad. They probably have to write that because if they just take the money they'd get into trouble, but they would have been better off just posting a link to the Red Cross.

If you donate $25 or more, Spymac.com will give you free ad-free status for two weeks. Please include your Spymac username in order to take advantage of this offer.
