How do you post a pic, I have a really good desktop pic that i want to share. (sorry to put this on this thread)First, use Cmd + Shift + 3 to take a screenshot. It will save to your desktop as a PDF. The easiest way from here is to open it in preview, go to File -> Export, choose JPEG, Color, Best Quality, and then change the target file size to 102400. (Don't remember units.) Then, post a reply, and use the "Attach Files" section to upload the picture.

most of the widescreen ones i saw stopped at 1440x900 but a lot of the 4:3 ones went up to 1600x1200 i believe. i'd like to see mine on a 1600x1200 display. that'd be one big apple logo! :D

I can't remember is that is longhorn 4074, or xp with the longhorn skin. I can't remember which I was logged in on.

You can transform xp using http://www.tcmagazine.info/modules.php?modid=4&action=show&id=199

Follow the directions exactly!

As for the Gwen background, email me at chuck_stacey@mac.com and I will send you the desktop.

Do everyone's desktops always look as clean as these photos suggest? Mine's pretty awful right now. Drab photo in the background, with a random unfiled mess of stuff on top. Some (early) spring cleaning is in order, but my apartment needs it even more :).

It *is* pretty awful, but fortunately MR has become my de facto desktop today. The worst part about my current setup is not my desktop, but that I don't have a chair - I've been standing up for nigh-on three and a half hours, and I'm only on page 6 of the "who is edesignuk?" thread.

You can't tell much in the jpeg, but there's some nice diagonal pinstripes through the entire wallpaper. It's very simple, but not plain. Perfect for Photoshop and FCP work.

Use grab from under the utilties in the applications folder
It's even easier than that, Grab is activated, by default, as a keystroke - Command + Shift + 3 takes a desktop snap sans mouse cursor.

So yeah, here's my January desktop (not posted it yet, heh). It's minimalist, because I took out my 1GB stick of RAM, back to 256. The dock is tiny because I use Quicksilver.

quidire - you can get good results with JPEG's, if you just know the settings to use. people use JPEG's mostly because they can be displayed as thumbnails if you attach them here on the forums. if you use a PDF then you can't see a thumbnail, all you see is that a file is attached. if someone does that with a PDF i usually skip past it...

Is that Adium you are using? And if so, how did you get it to look like that? I like how simple it is, very friendly looking. Also, how did you get the dock to stay over to the side like that? I like it, though it might not be as useful for me because I am on an iBook and stuck to 1024x768, but thats a great idea for people with big screens that dont like having it right in the middle or off on one of the sides.

If you download TinkerTool, you can make the dock stay in a corner, rather than centered on the edge of the screen. I believe TransparentDock will do it for you too.

If you mean the dock, that's already been answered—TinkerTool. If you mean the icons on my desktop, they're just shown with the text to the right and aligned to a grid. That's under View > Show View Options with all other Finder windows closed (Cmd+J). If you mean the transparent black panel behind them, that's DeskCoverX, useful for helping you read the white text for the icons when you have a light-colored background. It's nicely customizable, you can use colors, add a little border, do gradients or solids... very cool.

And to the other person who asked, yes, it's Adium X, just using the Mockie (small) list layout and a custom color scheme I built by sampling colors off my desktop wallpaper.
