a very nicely detailed and thoughtful review, the content was just what I wanted to read about.

... thanks to the submitter, and thanks for introducing me to a site (applelegal) that I didn't know about before.

I've wanted an iPod photo since they were announced. I've read lots of things saying they weren't worth the money, or the regular iPods were better. Personally, I'm a big music freak and the cd covers on the iPod, along with the extended battery life are enough to sell me. At least this review gives me some hope that I'm not the only one who thinks this way. Just waiting for the extra cash to come along to get me one ;)

Faster than my PC at home. Pentium 150Mhz. That computer can't even play MP3s in WinAmp without the occasional hiccup. I believe its on its last legs. Prolly could sell it for $30, put it towards a future 100GB ipod.

I probably couldn't care less about the photo capability, but the color screen and better battery do it for me too. It's a little expensive, but I think it's worth it.

I almost bought a Mini, and I'm glad I got the Photo instead!

I use it mainly for music, of course, but the photo-display stuff is great to have. No more need to have my laptop with me if I want to show photos (or my portfolio for that matter).

Im glad I bought both :D

But I find myself keeping all my audiobooks on the ipod 20 and using the mini for working out and physically stuff like that.

Have you tried putting Slackware or DSL on this thing? There's a thread here somewhere about micro Linux installations... I seriously doubt the dual arm setup is faster than your P5/150... Windows is wasting a lot of time in the background executing useless code, you know. ;) I remember that under windows 95, I got good MP3 performance, as long as I wasn't running much else in the background, on my Compaq P5/150 laptop with 48 megs of ram, back about 8 years ago....

Funny thing, it couldn't play MP3s smoothly but I was able to play Age of Empires on the Zone easily. Besides that's all I use that old PC for anyways, AOE on the Zone, and some other Zone games. Too bad Mac's don't work on the Zone, otherwise my time here would be severely cut in half.

A nice article. I still don't really have a need at this point for an iPod. Looking down the road maybe.

The color interface makes a big difference. It should be the standard for all future iPods.

The iPod 20Gb I think is already slated to be planned for obselesence.

I don't know how SOON color will come to the other iPods, but someday I'm sure it will be standard and there will be no "photo" models anymore.

When that day comes, an iPod Mini with, say, 10 GB and a color screen would be my dream iPod. That's plenty for my music and photos.
