We've received word that Apple has released the third beta version of iOS 4.2 and the associated Software Development Kit for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch to developers. The release comes two weeks after the release of the second beta (http://www.macrumors.com/2010/09/28/ios-4-2-beta-2-and-itunes-10-1-beta-seeded-to-developers/) version.

There is no word yet on changes included in the new version, but we'll update with any significant revelations.

Can someone test iTunes the 10.1 beta to see if it fixes the podcast syncing issue? With the current iTunes version this is broken. The played position (where you are in the podcast) isn't syncing correctly from iTunes to iPhone. Sometimes it syncs and sometimes it doesn't. Also, a brand new podcast will sometimes sync the played position to somewhere in teh middle even though you've never played it in iTunes or the iPhone yet. For someone who probably consumes more podcast content than television, this bug is KILLING ME.

I think AirPlay video will require 4.2 for AppleTV as well, which will probably be released along side this, in Nov. I'll test 4.2B3 just to make sure.

For me Beta 2 was pretty slow. Changing apps through multitasking was sliggish.. I've used Beta 3 for about 10 minutes and it seems a lot smoother.

I also had a crash to the springboard when going into MobileMe settings, but I haven't experienced that yet.

1: I'm not a dev, but I had no problem loading iOS 4 GM on my phone back then. Will I be able to download and install this beta without being a registered developer, or is that only for GM releases?

2: Do I have to delete everything in my phone to upgrade to this beta release as I did when I upgraded to iOS 4 GM?

You can upgrade to 4.2 betas without UDID. Just shift-check for update(update button on itunes, and NOT the restore one). I did this from 3.2 and 3.2.1 to 4.2b1 and 2. It works just fine. Be sure to have your iPad activated before. I wouldn't try it on iPhones though...

I think the current ATV2 already has that capability today. I have one but of course never looked for it but i read this post and so i thought since video wasnt enabled, and audio worked, if this beta enabled video, it could work.

It just amazes me the people that install a Beta and aren't Dev's.

Just for the record, Beta 2 was buggy as was beta1, especially with sandbox and mail app, but kiddies playing with a beta think its all fairy dust and Magic, oops that's right it is at least Magic.

Im happy to see a new beta, app design for some has been not existent since bugs had to be resolved before work could continue. Yes it was that bad and worse than all betas prior to 4.2

Now as long as the mail app allows PDF's to open in my app without blanking the document, design work can continue which will make me a happy camper.

Same here. I had a few bugs with beta1 that were fixed in beta2. I've hardly encountered any bugs with beta2. Definitely not worth giving up app-switching and folders, among other features.

And yes, I installed the first 2 betas with no developer account, just option-updated. Very simple and trouble-free.

I wonder if Apple is still being stupid about not allowing "Retina" apps to run at full resolution on the iPad.

Why not allow this? 1024x768 will run 960x640 apps just fine. No reason to drop back to 480x320 and upscale.

I hope they change the switch back to a screen orientation lock from a mute switch. Seems incredibly stupid to still have the old way of muting the iPad along with changing the screen orientation lock to mute switch.

I have heard a reason and if it's true I actually fully support Apple in this one.

You may think it's crazy, but think about this.

If they did allow iPhone4 960x640 apps to run at full res on the iPad, yes, it would allow many new apps to run at almost full iPad screen which you would think is a good thing.

But. It would start to make developers lazy and not bother with an iPad version at 1024x768 as their one iPhone4 app if almost full screen so it will do.

I personally want PROPER iPad apps running at full iPad screen size. Not a load of iPhone4 960x640 apps on the iPad with a pixel border about the app.

I'm not saying every developer would do this, but you can be sure a fair number would feel why bother putting a lot of work into an iPad app as the iPhone4 app is virtually full iPad screen.

So, as I said, which it may seen annoying in the short term, I am happy (for the sake of the iPad) that Apple don't allow this and developers have to create a seperate iPad app, as then they will probably also change the interface to suit the larger screen also.

I don't see how. There is so much more to iPad support than just rez. Plus by supporting Retina display all the buttons and stuff will be way bigger than normal and quite clunky. I agree Ple should support Retina on iPad because all it would do is make iPhone apps more crisp, but still just as unusable as they are now.

Well, even though Apple claims tens of thousands of apps for the iPad, the reality is that the iPad, despite its success, is ignored by app developers. It doesn't get anywhere near the same attention the iPhone gets. So we're often stuck with an iPhone version of the app. And having it run at 960x640 would be a lot better than having it run at upscaled 480x320.

On top of that, I think the other reason is that it would finally open peoples eyes to the fact that all of these "HD" apps are ripoffs. The vast majority of these apps are using the exact same assets as the iPhone version but rendered at 1024x768 instead of 960x640, like Let's Golf 2. It would be in Apple's best financial interest to not allow "Retina" games to run at native resolution because then they wouldn't get their 30% cut of a significantly higher priced "HD" app sale. Even if that "HD" app is using the exact same assets, like every Gameloft game.

Edit: It would be nice for Apple to think of consumers for once, instead of margins. Allow the iPad to run "Retina" apps at native resolution to encourage app developers to write universal apps rather than separate iPhone and significantly higher priced "HD" apps for the iPad.

Twitter for iPad will need to be fixed by its developers. Currently, the state is being saved only when the app is closed. Since 4.2 allows multitasking, this never happens (a different method is called when the app is suspended). Thus, the state is being lost when the suspended app is terminated due to low memory (which happens a lot).

According to 9to5, AirPlay is gone from the YouTube app. Content providers are so obnoxious. I'm sure YouTube won't be the last provider to prevent AirPlay in their apps.

If Airplay was removed on purpose than this is bad, bad news. Not having Airplay as a universal option to beam any video content to a large screen completely takes out the magic of this great feature. I really hope this is a bug and not some restriction from content providers...

Something quite strange happens with Airplay on iPhone 4. If you "link" your phone to stream audio in the iPod app. Then quit but leave the Airplay button active. Your phones audio still streams over to the Apple TV or Airport Express etc.

For example, when you type the "clicks" are streamed over, and someone just called me and the phone rang via the Airport Express connected to my Hi-Fi. The same happens for New text messages, New Emails.

Feature or Bug? what do we think?

Hope it's a feature cause like it!

I always put my phone in the dock, either to sync, charge or just to know where it is and sometimes i can't ear an alert or incoming call when i'm outside or on the other side of the house :)

If its a feature I really hope there is some kind of standardised volume put in place for the streaming. For example, If i run audio to my Airport Express the volume slider needs to be around half way. If I run to my sound system connected to my Apple TV It needs to be around quarter volume. When the phone rang and Streamed the ringtone to my Apple TV. The slider was near half way and Marimba shook my house scaring the **** out of me.

If that is the reason, iPad wouldn't scale 480x320 iPhone apps to 960x640 either.

I'm glad this sorts out vlc, air video and iPlayer.
On a slight tangent......
Its getting a bit old, people moaning about non developers running a beta OS. Im no developer but I like to mess with beta software for fun. I know there's no garantees it will work properly but its nice to toy with some new features.
If a non dev asks apple for help with a beta OS they will tell him or her where to go, but forums like this should be the place where people like that can get help. I appreciate there are some legal issues, but I think with common sense we can help people without pissing off Apple.

Yep, no video AirPlay. I think we will see iOS 4.2 for Apple TV 2 too. At the moment, it's still at 4.0.

Here's a screenshot of the Apple TV (not) AirPlaying a movie.

I would like to see volume control while using the Apple TV via the remote. It can be changed in itunes and using the ipad volume controls so I don't know why the streamed Netflix, Youtube, Podcast volume can't be adjusted unless I am not knowing how to change it on the remote.

Cooliris Discover still doesn't work, and paid for iBooks won't load. Apart from those two issues (which are likely to be app bugs rather than core os bugs), everything else seems to be working fine at the moment. My battery does seem to be draining at an alarming rate, though...

I'm fairly certain that Apple writes that YouTube app. I don't think you will see app developers delivering iOS 4.2 apps in the app store until iOS 4.2 is ready. I heard the AirPlay button was ALSO missing from the "Videos" app. I'm guessing they will re-enable that feature once the have the update ready for the AppleTV.

The Airplay button for the iPod app only appears once the iPad has discovered devicesvthatvit can stream to. As there are no devices that will allow video to be air played to them yet (afaik) it could be just that that is causing the button to be not there.

I'd rather they'd just allow custom SMS ringtones than feed us more crap ones. Performance enhancements are welcomed though.

I think the new SMS tones might well be a sign that they'll do just that.
Else, why keep a separate list for the new ones. And, yeah, most of them are crap...

Yeah this has REALLY annoyed me. I have been watching a great deal of different content on the Apple TV and constantly have to change the volume. And I have yet to figure out how to change the volume on the Apple TV itself. I always have to change the volume on my receiver instead. This is pretty annoying having to use a separate remote every time.

Was the prior Apple TV & remote able to control volume?

I wonder if Apple is still being stupid about not allowing "Retina" apps to run at full resolution on the iPad.

Why not allow this? 1024x768 will run 960x640 apps just fine. No reason to drop back to 480x320 and upscale.

I would absolutely hate this idea because I think that will encourage more developers to be satisfied with just releasing iPhone versions of their apps. Then we end up getting more half done apps on the iPad rather than apps that were specifically designed to maximize its resolution.

The reason more developers haven't made iPad apps is that it's a small market right now. Only a few million out there, compared to like 100 million iPhone-sized devices

Not a valid reason, you want your app to be the first on the iPad to grab as much as users as you can because those users can spread the word about your applications as the market expand. Brand awareness and free advertising is always good. Not to mention as the market expand, the odds of you being able to charge MORE for your iPad app will decrease as the competition will increase to grab those users as well.

Does anyone know if this update or any upcoming ones will be fixing the car stereo compatibility problems? I've heard a lot of people saying that they don't work with 4.1 and maybe 4.0 and I'm planning on getting a new stereo in my car but I don't want to spend $400 if it isn't going to work with my Phone!

Beta 1 and b2 were not locked on the iPad, you could use command+update in iTunes 10.1 to upgrade an iPad without all the dev BS.

Yes, so far, including beta 3, you can option+update without the need for a developer account.

There have been quite a few UI changes....
The include a new icon for mute. No longer has image of ringer like iphone.
New wallpapers. The classic bubble one has had its resolution upped (finally).
Multitasking bar now appears alot smoother.

Also, generally the ipad feels smoother, but it is still not perfection.

My thoughts on AirPlay:

1) A possible reason the AP icon seems to have disappeared from the video apps and youtube, could be that Apple is having AirPlay go out and "see" if the device (ATV) can play audio and/or video and is removing the AirPlay icon if there are no AirPlay video capable devices found. Since the ATV isn't AirPlay Video capable yet (until 4.2 for ATV), the icon is missing.

2) One improvement in AirPlay over the previous beta is the volume bar now works. Previously, you would get sound but adjusting the volume bar didn't do anything.

I wish Apple would just release its software sooner. The current stuff is as buggy as ever, so why not slap us with new features more quickly?

You try to develop a bug free Unified OS that works on 7 different iDevice.
