I've only got 512 Ram on my 17" PBook and it does not do games too well, should i spend £100 on upgrading to 1 GB? will it increase the speed of games a lot?

Depends if you are running other apps while gaming . .but I don't think you'll see that much difference between 512 and 1024 for gaming ..

The biggest impact you see from increasing RAM is the DECREASE in loading times. E.g. loading times of a map in a game like UT2k4, or the loading phase in WoW.

Actual gameplay? Not as significant, unless your hard drive was getting paged like crazy (which may have caused dropped frames or stuttering). If that wasn't the case, actual game play does not see as big an impact.
