View Full Version : DVD-RAM drive - any value?

Way back in the day, I bought the top of the line 450mhz G4 (AGP 2X) with the DVD-RAM drive. Is this drive of any value today? Can I use it for anything other than small data backup? I have over 120gb on my system total (2 drives). I think the only discs you can use with this drive are the double-sided Type-2 DVD-RAM discs, which only hold 2.7gb on each side. Is that correct? Is anyone finding a better use for theirs? If so, where are you getting your discs?

The reason I ask is because I have been considering replacing it with a Superdrive. Does anyone know of a list posted somewhere of compatible 3rd party superdrives? I know that most of the Pioneers, some Toshibas, and maybe a Sony and Hitachi drive are compatible, but as to what numbers I don't know. Any help would be great!

As far as your DVD-RAM drive goes it's probably close to worthless. Maybe worth $10 or so. The only reason why someone would want one is if they have old DVD-RAM media that they want to access and have not transferred to other media.

I have the same model Mac, and I use Maxell DVD Ram disks.

the Type II are model No. VD-RAM26R - single sided 2.6GB and the Type I are model No. VD-RAM52F - double sided 2.6GB.

Slow by today's standards, but very convenient.
I even have a writable OS9 boot disk.

How much do those disks cost, and where do you usually get them?

Thanks for the link. This looks like a good deal. I might consider it with the DVR-108. I wouldn't want to go without dual layer.

If you want, you can send it to me, I'll pay shipping plus $10. I collect obsolete optical formats in working order.

Thx.
Max.

What ticks me off is that I bought the top of the line, the best they made, and it was obsolete (because of the SuperDrive) a few months later. ERRRRRR!

A lesson that we should always wait to buy the latest and greatest, so we can get it cheaper and with better components - and it really helps to be a member of the MacRumors website. ;)

I'm in the UK, but I'm sure there are people in the U.S. still doing them even if they're not advertising, I phoned the people at a blank media specialist up and just asked for them and they said they could get then in a couple of days.

The single would have to be about $15, does that sound right?
sorry I'm not of more help
