Is $587 for a 1Ghz 12" G4 iBook with a 30G hard drive and 256mb ram a good deal? My university is offering this deal right now and a coworker wants to know if they should jump on it.
They won't be using it for anything heavy, a lot of flight planning (he is a pilot) and I would assume internet.

This is their discription of it.
EOL APPLE IBOOK 12"TFT 1GHZ 256MB 30GB (NO AIRPORT) DVD/CDRW COMBO LIMITED QTY M9426LL/A
I think that they are going to go ahead and get it (and yes they will be uping the ram).

With the combo in it it is not a bad deal .. like you said RAM should be upgraded .. but for the rest is seems like a good deal if they are new ..

Brand new from Apple I believe.

Yep, a good deal. Add an airport card for $69 and you've basically got the equivalent of a brand-new iBook G4 -- the only difference is the CPU speed (1.0 vs. 1.2). So for around $650 you get a computer worth almost $950 (.edu pricing).

I wish I had U of I friends so I could take advantage of this amazing deal. I go to Columbia College and we have an "on campus Apple store" which is one desk in the newspaper office with some brochures on it. We don't get the kind of special pricing that the U of I and UCLA gets.

Sounds like a great deal. I have 1gh PB, and it is plenty enough for me.
Like others have said RAM and the Airport card are the only things I would add.

And here I'm tempted to pay $650 for the same iBook at the University where I work. $587 is practically giving them away. ;-)
