View Full Version : Is there snow on the ground near you?

It seems that most of the country got snow this week with more on the way so its a good time to ask how much snow is on the ground near you. We are expecting another storm in the northeast tomorrow.

We have about 1.5" of icy snow. We didn't get hit that hard from the storm a couple days ago. And next week its supposed to get in the 50s again.
I'm hoping we get a big freeze after that so the lake behind my house freezes over again and we can get some more skating in this winter...

I live in Kentucky, haven't seen snow in almost 3 weeks. With temps in the 50s and 60s I'm about to go crazy! !   I like cold weather and snow. Today temps were in the 30s so I was a little happy, but the temperature is going back up. Hopefully the meteorologists are right when they say the temp is supposed to drop back to normal next week :) :) :)

Snow in Los Angeles City? Never. Well, rarely. I think I read that it snowed in the middle of L.A. once in the 1930s.
But it did hail in some parts of the county this week. We've had rain almost every day for a week, pausing just long enough for the Rose Parade to show the world how nice Southern California is, and then it went back to rain, and we have another week of it ahead of us.
It's only an hour's drive to mountain ski resorts, and I'm going skiing at the end of the month! :)

Winter storm warning in effect from 6 am Saturday to 6 pm est saturday,
The winter storm watch has been converted to a winter storm warning for much of interior southern new england including the immediate boston metropolitan area.
A fast developing but rapidly moving low pressure system will bring a period of heavy snow to a large portion of southern new england saturday.
Widespread 4 to 8 inch amounts are forecast.
Temperatures will be at or below freezing during the snow and an hour or two of visibilities near one quarter mile will accompany nearly one inch per hour snowfall.
The most likely target for heavy snow appears to lie along and about 30 miles north of interstate 84 from hartford to sturbridge then eastward to along the mass turnpike to boston and northward to the merrimack valley. High terrain will probably have widespread 6 to 8 inch amounts and 6 to 8 inch snowfall is even highly probable for the city of worcester and near boston.
Springfield, fitchburg, leominster, and beverly in massachusetts as well as hartford and putnam in northern connecticut, and woonsocket in northern rhode island are also within the target zone for 4 to 8 inch amounts. A little sleet and freezing rain may occur for a short time in northern connecticut and northern rhode island.
Those traveling into southern new hampshire can expect several inches of snow there and an advisory has been posted.
Heavy snow will accumulate on roadways and significantly hamper travel. Those that have to be out on the roads will need to use extreme caution and allow plenty of extra time.

No snow in here in Northern California, except for the highest peaks at times. But there was/is snow near L.A. in the Grapevine with was closed earlier this week by the CHP. I actually just got back from Anaheim and saw plenty of snow on the moutain peaks in Southern California and in the Grapevine - a welcomed site :)

DC is weird with snow...some years nothing, then *WHAM*, two feet in a day and the whole city shuts down.
Then it rains two days later and its all gone.....
Here's a pic of the lake in the back yard after the snow a while back....its not frozen right now after 40s and 50s and rain....

I had that happen to me in '93. Flew in for an interview with the company that hired me and that weekend it dumped 2', closed down National Airport and everything else....
Crazy sometimes. The best was in '96-'97 when we had two snows of 18" in one week. The same year the mayor, Marion Barry, had decided to outsource all the plowing for the city. When it came time for the streets to be plowed, all the companies that had been signed up for DC were off plowing other places for more money. There were some places in the city that weren't cleared for over a week.
I remember riding down Conn. Ave one afternoon and I was the only car on the road...it was all pedestrian traffic and skiers (I had an 4x4 SUV, so snow wasn't that much of an issue). A very surreal experience, especially if you've ever driven in the city. :D

Duff-Man says...we don't get snow here every winter but once every few years we get a small blast...and it was today...about 10" so far where I am and the city has ground to a complete halt...kinda nice and peaceful....doesn't bother me too much as I grew up in eastern Canada (Toronto) so I remember what snow is like...but a lot of people here have no idea how to cope with it and for some insane reason think they can continue to drive as if the snow was not there at all. In all likelihood it will all be melted in the next week or so and we will be back into the normal winter weather pattern of mostly scattered rain showers....oh yeah!

Lotsa black ice and rain. They keep threatening snow, but I don't see it where I am. I have been late for work a couple of times the last 2 weeks. The other day, there were a ton of accidents on the 5 Freeway, so I'm just glad I made it at all. Glad I didn't get stuck at work (in Seattle) either. The news keeps making it seem like it's a blizzard or something.

We haven't gotten jack squat this year. Or the previous. Or the previous. I think the previous was attributed to El Nino or something. Minnesota has this rep for getting buried in snow when in reality New York and pretty much the rest of the country has been getting more then us the last couple years. :(
Heck no more then 2-3 weeks ago it was 50* here. Which for MN is insanely warm. We haven't had a REAL snow storm in something like 10-15 years. All I know is the winters here are NOT the same as the ones I knew growing up.
The next person who tells me the climate isn't shifting or that global warming isn't doing something is going to eat my sandal. (since there isn't enough snow to warrant a boot.)
On the other hand we kicked the snot out of Siberia at one point last year for temperature. I think it was some lonely little town up north. Something like -43 or something insane. Other then the Antarctic there was only one other colder place then us. Those bastard Swedes (Or was it Norwegians?) had to steal our fun. ;) Just kidding.

Officially only about 13 inches.
Haven't seen that much since 1991 in MN (grew up in Lakeville). It was halloween and we got almost 30 inches - Duluth was even harder hit. I also remember another 18 or so near thanksgiving. That month 11/1991 almost 4 feet of snow fell. Those were the days. Living in SE WI, I figured it would be similar - but in reality the last 3-4 years haven't produced much for snow. To little, in fact, that I sold my snowmobiles this past fall.

DI remember when that happened. I was only 6 than and I remember that I could burrow under the snow and make little caves in it. So far this year I have no snow at all except for about 1/2 of an inch which doesn't really count. It only lasted for a bout a day.
My grandmother is swiss and my dad got to go there a lot when he was a kid to go skiing. I've only been there twice in the summer. He said that once before he went to bed there was no snow on the ground and the next day the cars where completely covered in snow. One of the houses in the town burned down that day because they where trying to melt the water in the pipes with a blow torch. The fire department could only throw snow on the house because they couldn't get their trucks through the snow. The house burned down anyway. My uncle who lives in Las Vegas said that they got more snow than we have gotten this year. Thats not fair.

Just endless rain, which is really out of the ordinary here in SoCal. The best part is when the rain stops though, the atmosphere is always so clear and everything is green for a while. The rain clears the smog and you can see the mountains that are usually hidden. If people had more time to appreciate the view they might consider wanting it to be clear all of the time.
