Right now, I am in the middle of a Online Chat Session with a Gateway Sales Advisor, I am going to post the transcript of the chat as soon as it becomes available, this guy doesnt know jack..

( Shon has joined )

( Wade has joined )

Shon: Howdy Wade

Shon: I have a couple questions about buying a Windows Machine over a Mac

Wade: Hello, welcome to Gateway.com. My name is Wade Whitmer and I will be your E-Sales advisor.

Wade: Sure how can I help?

Shon: How good is the new iMac like Profile better than a mac? and how is it for digital video editing

Wade: Oh my gosh

Wade: our system is sooo much better than the imac

Shon: but how is it better than the iMac?

Wade: it has excellent accessability for parts

Shon: ok,

Shon: What ports come on it

Wade: connectivity is better

Shon: Like USB? Firewire?

Wade: sure one sec

Shon: Why is the connectivity better

Shon: whats the maximum armount of ram

Wade: where the ports are located

Shon: that it can hold?

Wade: Shon

Wade: hold up

Shon: where are the ports located?

Wade: and let me answer one question at a time

Shon: ok

Wade: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ile.shtml

Wade: ok lets look at them

Shon: OK, i see it has the same size LCD as a iMac

Wade: max memory is 1024mb

Shon: A decent amount of Ram

Shon: But it doesnt have a DVD Burner like the Macs Have

Wade: max hard drive is 120g

Wade: you can do a combo drive for $100

Shon: And i have been talking to both Mac Users and PC Users and the Mac Users say you used a slowe version of Mac OS X

Shon: slower*

Wade: hahah I am sure they did

Shon: Does it have firewire?

Wade: yes 2

Wade: on the front

Wade: instead of hiding out in back

Wade: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...fig.shtml

Wade: here look at this

Wade: we clock speed faster than the IMac

Shon: but some people say clock speed doesnt matter,

Wade: we have long term expandability and they don't

Shon: All it means is you can push data through faster..

Wade: hahah if they don't have it yes

Wade: which means you can process your application faster

Shon: but what about the 20 data pipes the Pentium 4 Has, as compared to the 8 that a PowerPC G4 Has

Shon: I am soooo confused!

Shon: All i want is a computer that is best for editing the Movies I make

Shon: Does Apple's final cut pro work on windows?

Wade: well I would argue then that you should be looking at a traditional system

Wade: but if you want an all in one

Wade: we really do stomp Imac at this time

Shon: i have heard that FCP is the best digital video ediotr

Wade: FCP?

Shon: Ok, so what kind of Traditional System would you recommend

Shon: FCP= Final Cut Pro

Wade: at least the 500x

Wade: oh hmmm I don't know enough about them to really have a good honest opinion

Wade: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ail.shtml

Shon: ok, so i was reading the PC Test you guys did against the iMac

Wade: take a look at this system

Shon: why didnt you use Mac OS X 10.2?

Wade: which one?

Shon: in your tests

Wade: we did

Shon: you had a Adobe Acrobat File

Wade: Apple always complains that we don't use their application and so we did and we still beat them

Shon: It says you used 10.1.5 and 10.0.4

Wade: which test are you looking at?

Shon: http://etestinglabs.com/main/reports/gateway.pdf

Wade: ahh I just went there

Shon: Whats the difference between 10.1.5 10.2 and 10.0.4

Shon: sorry 10.1.4

Wade: hmm that is a good question

Shon: and what kind of Warranty would come with my systems

Wade: one sec

Shon: I want to buy 3 of them

Wade: well the limted warranty defaults at 1 year poarts labor and support

Shon: But i want them to be the best for my Digital Video Creation (I make snowboarding and skateboarding videos)

Wade: but you can upgrade to 3 years parts labor and life of the system support

Shon: Do you have bigger monitors, or Dual Monitor supoprt

Shon: and video capture cards

Shon: and how many hard drives will the 500x hold?

Wade: hang on a sec again I need to do one thing at at time

Wade: Now the reason we didn't use the Mac OS 10.2

Wade: is that it was a test between a windows speed test vs a mac speed test

Wade: after all you wouldn't be running a mac os on a pc

Shon: why didnt you use OS X 10.2 on the mac though is what i aqm wondering

Wade: it wouldn't likely have made a difference but we couldn't tell you as the test was done by an independant lab

Wade: they chose the most comparable OS

Shon: Oh ok.

Wade: so there are many reasons for a gateway over MAC not just the speed of processing although that should be important

Shon: oh ok,

Wade: Now on the 500x you can have 2 optical drives

Shon: but if i was to buy a gateway would i suffer from a Blue Screen of Deasth

Wade: hahah no you wouldn

Wade: oh and the 500x could hold an internal zip if you needed

Wade: oh and 2 hard drives

Shon: So your saying i would have the blue screen of death in windows? what about a memory dump

Wade: XP is MUCH more stable than all previuos OS and you have better chance of winning the lotterey than having blue screen

Wade: We do have bigger monitors

Wade: when you are looking at video capture do you mean like dazzle

Shon: Do you have a 23" LCD Display

Wade: no we have a 22 inch

Shon: and will it suport dual monitors

Shon: Do you know how often a Macintosh Crashes

Shon: ?

Wade: hahah no I give how many

Shon: and does Windows XP have protected Memory

Shon: I dont know I was asking, if you knew.

Wade: haha no I am not way up on Apple products and performance

Shon: oh ok.

Wade: an upograded vid card can support dual monitors

Wade: one analog and one digital

Wade: or 2 analog with an $11 converter

Shon: ok

Shon: What about wireless networking, do i have the option of that or do i need cables

Shon: strung all over my office, so my wife can castrate me, when she sees the ugly cables all over

Wade: you can add the wireless adapter

Wade: hahaha

Wade: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...fig.shtml

Wade: ok here is the customize page for the 500x

Wade: so you can see what changes are possible and how much they would cost

Shon: Ok, and is there an option for Zero Configuration Networking (The Computer Automatically recognizes any computer with in 50 feet of it? and can share data?)

Wade: this system has a DVRAM (burner)

Wade: It comes with Pinnacle 8.0 and Pinnacle express

Shon: Ok, and will Adobe Premere work good on it?

Wade: hmm it should one sec

Shon: And when Apple Releases the G5, will it be better to buy a mac or stick with windows?

Wade: There should be a pc version of it but I don't find it in our accessory superstore

Wade: Shon really I have to say I am partial so keep this in mind

Wade: BUT

Shon: Ok, I just want your opinions

Wade: with almost the entire industry making parts and software for a pc

Shon: I am not going to run to your Supervisor and tell him you Biased my Opinion.

Wade: I just can't imagine going with APPLE anymore

Wade: haha

Wade: no I just want to remind you that I know I am biased

Wade: It is sad because I hate to see monopolies

Shon: I need informed descisions from informed people, i dont know too much about computers, I do Digital Videos and use my computer to edit them, and check my emai

Shon: Do you know if there is a Microsoft Office suite for Mac OS X?

Wade: but these days it isn't true any longer that for graphics applications APPLe is strongest performer

Shon: or does this gateway come with office?

Wade: No there is not a mac version of Office suite, why would they make mac progams? Microsoft doesnt make anything for Mac

Wade: and all of our systems come with XP home

Wade: There of course aren't mac versions of windows

Shon: XP Home? I heard XP Home sucked more ass than a chinese crack whore, what about XP Pro do you sell that

Wade: haha yes we do sell it

Shon: Ok, and do you have a service like .Mac?

Wade: and yes like all OS releases it did have some bad press from techies

Wade: they of course were trying to make it do gymnastics it wasn't meant to do

Wade: No, We dont like to screw over our customers.

Wade: what is it?

Shon: ohh ok

Shon: Well I need to think this over some more,

Wade: sure no prob

Wade: I wish I was more help

Shon: Thanks for your help Wade, you have fun

Wade: hey you too

Wade: call me if you need anything

Wade: I hope I was able to help you and if you have any questions please contact me at: wade.whitmer@gateway.com or 1-800-846-2036 ext 56273. My Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Central Standard time.

Wade: Go Go Gateway

Wade: (C:

Shon: Cheers mate!

Wade: see ya

This comment made me use the f word outloud:

>(wade) [Mac OS X 10.2] wouldn't likely have made a difference but we couldn't tell you as the test was done by an independant lab

Number 1: Even independent labs should be responsable and updated tests. OS X 10.2 is the latest update. If the test is not based on the current and latest versions of the Apple OS, than the test isn't worth much.

Number 2: I have not seen ONE COMPLAINT about OS X 10.2 being slower than anyone on OS X 10.1, especially since many people would do a fresh install. Actually, 10.2 is faster than the original OS X and 10.1 in boot time, and 10.2 maximizes what G3 computers can handle with incredible speed increases. Imagine what a G4 can do.

>(wade) No, We dont like to screw over our customers.

With the tests posted on the Gatelaid website, you and your company just did. Not only did you screw over customers, but you also made yourself look silly.

Example 1: Take a look at your hardware. Tell me: Was that an original idea? If so, who created it? That's right. Apple. Don't steal ideas from others. And, if you can't come up with them, don't come up with anything at all.

Example 2: Your tests are clearly obvious that you gave both computers easy tasks to perform. Tell me: How many people take pictures and want to save them on a computer? How many people like to edit those photos? How many people go into video editing? How much faster can you encode music on a Mac compared to a PC? Performing such tasks is hard work, and the iMac can do hard work.

Think again, Gatelaid. Don't screw with them Apples. :D :p

Now we have written confirmation that the people at Gateway are completely devoid of any useful knowledge. Wade obviously has not left the Gateway store for a while "No there is not a mac version of Office suite, why would they make mac progams? Microsoft doesnt make anything for Mac". He must have missed the pass 5 years. Oh really? You say there arent any mac versions of windows, damn i was wondering why i could never get this windows cd to install on my G4. Oh so the reason that they didnt use 10.2 is because it doesnt run on a pc, that makes sense.

I wish that i could go on gateways site and talk to one of the reps, but i feel dirty when i stray towards pc oriented pages. I have to go take a shower, cant get stench of gateway off, must scrub harder.

I'd love to see a mac version of that to see how well the Apple people handle such questions. Good support is tough sometimes, I wonder how long Wade has been working for Gateway?

Now how young are most of you guys/gals? Teens/20s? And you're outsmarting a 30 somethin' year old sales guy. If Mac users get that support, then what support to PC users get?

At least the Apple salespeople know what in Jack's name they are talking about. On July 20 I went to the nearby Apple Store early and saw a Jaguar demo. A few people were watching, and the "nerd" doing the demo answered everyone's question, in most cases, better than I could answer.

Ok, some people have asked some questions, so i thought i would awnser

1. I hope you decide to buy a Macintosh: I already own 3. I have a Dual 1.0 GHZ, a TiBook 800 and a Powerbook G3 500.

I have been a mac user since i came out of the womb. My mother on the other hand, when i bought her a new computer a year or so ago, opted for "The Cow Spotted Boxes" (She lives in Idaho so it makes some sense) now a year or so later, she hates the gateway (she is tired of the Blue Screen of Death.... you know...the one our new friend wade said I had a better chance of winnning the Lottery than ever seeing on my computer) she is contimplating wether she wants an iMac or a G4.

My girlfreind/fiance/partner on the other hand uses a Dell Insperion 4100 Series that I got her for her Birthday, because she is still in college and didnt want a Mac.

I am in my Mid 20's,

Thanks for the replys to my post, it has been fun reading what people have said about the Commrades over at Gatelaid.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

We should start a new thread titled 'Post your Gateway online chat sessions HERE"

This is a unedited session, I swear. These guys are about as smart as a bag of rocks:

Question: Other

( Roger has joined )
( Maxine has joined )
Maxine: Hello Roger! Thanks for choosing Gateway.com. My name is Maxine, and I will be your eSales advisor.
Roger: how much does the screen move? Can I adjust the height and the angle?
Maxine: how may I help you today?
Maxine: which monitor do you have?
Roger: I'm asking about the Profile 4
Maxine: oh, no those screens don't move. adjusting height? sit it on top of a book or something
Roger: are you serious?
Maxine: it's not an adjustable screen like that. not like a steering wheel, sorry
Roger: Oh, okay, you compare it to the imac and I know you can move the screen higher/lower on it. Just thought I'd ask
Roger: can I upgrade the RAM myself or do you have to install?
Maxine: we would install
Roger: so I would have to send it back in if I wanted to upgrade the memory later? Is the same true with the hard drive?
Maxine: which Profile 4 are you asking about, Roger? Profile 4SE or 4X?
Roger: I haven't made up my mind yet...are the options different for either machine?
Maxine: yes, the 4SE has a Celeron processor and 4X has Pentium 4.
Roger: I know Maxine, my question was about upgrading later, if I want to add more memory after the purchase, would I have to send it back to you guys or could I install it myself?
Maxine: Memory 256MB DDR 266MHz 184-pin DIMMs expandable to 1024MB; on these types of systems, you can take to a Gateway Country Store to have them install more memory
Roger: so it isn't something I can buy and install myself, correct? Also, do you offer any video card upgrades?
Roger: And is there a DVD-R option?
Maxine: correct, and no there is no place for a separate video card or DVD-R
Maxine: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ail.shtml
Maxine: Here is the webpage for the Profile 4SE, for instance. Click "Customize" on the right by the price to see what changes can be made
Roger: OK, do you know what resolution the LCD is?
Roger: hello?
Maxine: 1024x768
Roger: on the 17"?
Maxine: 15"
Maxine: 1280x1024 on 17"
Roger: ok, thanks:rolleyes:

I have walked into Apple stores and asked Wintel compatibility type questions and received many "I don't knows", shrugs, and blank stares. I wasn't trying to play "stump the salesman" I was just trying to ask legitimate questions about their stuff. I actually was detered from buying a mac 3 years ago or so because I had asked a saleman about the Virtual PC program. Went back and talked to an friend who was a Mac guru and told me that info was false. (I can't remember the question only that I perceived it to be erroneous). Answering sincere questions on the fly can be hard enough, but when you are being set up, of course you are going to come off looking stupind, uninformed, etc. Why should a Gateway salesman know about Apple products?

Of course, this is Gateways own doing... by singling out Apple in their comparison ads, people buying are going (and should) expect the sales people to articulate the differences between the two prducts besides the just Ghz. differences.

Can't people sue gateway for false advertising since the profile's screen doesn't move? In their ads, the profile's screen moves all over the place and the neck seems to be really flexible. That is blatantly false advertising!

i was talking to an esales rep and he was a total jerk saying that everything about the profile was better...especially the design...he told me the imac look's like the profile 2...and told me there were no pictures of it anywhere...i asked him about the tech supports page and he said that the tech supports pages are not functional...NO TECH SUPPORT?...i also asked about adjusting the lcd height/position and he ignored me...just didn't say anything for about 2 minutes...then he came up with some ******** about how adjusting it just "isn't practicle"...

then he had me click on a link for the profile 2 and it ended our conversation so i could not copy it and paste it here

There's a disclaimer at the bottom of the screen that says something to the effect of "movement simulated". That's how they avoid false advertising.

Question: Other
__(_David has joined_)
__(_Raef has joined_)
David: Hello
Raef: Hi David . Thank you for choosing Gateway.com. My name is Raef, and I will be your eSales Rep.
David: I would like to find out how much better the Profile 4 is than the New iMac from apple
Raef: http://www.etestinglabs.com/ma...teway.pdf
Raef: Here is a report done by testing labs.
David: seen it
Raef: great!
Raef: Where did you want to have your new Profile shipped to?
David: Why what Mac OS 10.1.5 used when 10.2 was out
David: I'm not ready for that yet
Raef: Not ready for 10.2?
David: for a Profile 4
David: i'm not ready to order yet
David: I have a bunch of questions
David: I probably will get one
David: I would like to burn DVD's
David: can I do that on a Profile 4
David: You there?
Raef: Not yet... If you get a external DVD burner you can do that.
David: I want internal
David: that doesn't matter to much
David: can I edit video on the profile 4
Raef: Yes, there is Firwire to connect your camcorder
David: what editting program can I use
Raef: Which ever you prefer... we do not limit you
David: I like the features I've seen on FCP
David: (Final Cut Pro)
David: can I use that
Raef: Is it Windows based?
David: no, its the industrial standerd for video editting
Raef: Oh...
David: its made by apple
Raef: What is it that you like about that one, that one other Windows based program will give you?
David: I also would still like to know why the heck 10.1.5 was used rather than 10.2
Raef: I think 10.2 just came out, right?
David: It has realtime editting
David: and has won an emmy
Raef: We went to Apple and ask them for a copy however they said no
Raef: I guess they do not want to put it to the test
David: o
Raef: We have new testing coming out though, just to show everyone.
David: good
David: and why dont you test mp3 encoding
Raef: Because Intel has already said the P4 performs better
Raef: I guess they do not feel a need to test it again
David: I'm sorry to say most people I know dont care about Acrobat Scroll speeds
David: I want proof
Raef: Did you check out Intel's website?
Raef: Just go to the P4 section
David: also, the frames per second are way out of proportion
Raef: Sounds like this will not meet your standard David
David: I know for a fact that embeded video cards can't provide FCPs like that unless the monitor is on superlow resolution
Raef: ok
David: so it was on superlow resolution?!?
David: wow
Raef: Was it?
David: does the screen move around
Raef: yes
David: you should know the resolution. you work there
David: I heard it doesn't
David: Can I make it go up and down like on the iMac?
Raef: You are a Mac fan aren't you?
Raef: and yes, it does
David: why do you say that
Raef: The REPORT says they testing was at 1024 x768
Raef: Maximum resolution 1280x1024
David: on the 17 inch model right
Raef: Correct...
David: why do you say I am a mac fan
Raef: That is a better value
Raef: You just know alot of mac info..you probably use a mac for work and home?
Raef: Right?
David: Actually, I'm A student
David: I'm a good comparison shopper
Raef: Any educated person would
Raef: What other questions did you have?
David: I also heard that XP has some problems
David: At least the home edition
Raef: nope... that is the nice thing about getting a build to order system. We install the lastest drivers from MS and give them to you. Just got a system, and no issues here
Raef: I got the Pro version though.
David: But you don't know about the home version
Raef: Just checked the Tech log and the last issue logged was in Jan.
Raef: For Windows XP home.
David: I find that hard to beleive as I am just about the most computer knowlageable 14 year old on the planet
Raef: ok..
David: My life is computers
Raef: cool...
David: And your one of the smartest guys in your department
Raef: lol.. I would not say that
David: your the only guy who figured out I was a Mac user
Raef: Will you hire me one day when you start your own company?
David: about 10 guys have talked to you guys to see how much you guys knew about the product your dissing
David: And they put things more blatently than me
David: about what the mac could do
David: where are you
David: and yes, I probably will hire you if you want to work as the vice CEO of apple
David: I might start an architecture firm though when I get out of MIT
David: I have an 800 on my math SAT already. I got it at age 13
David: say something
David: please
David: o, and maxine said that the only way to raise the screen was to sit it on books
David: TALK
David: PLEASE
David: I have to do homework

All right. Here's my second try. I would've gone on longer, but the ******** kicked me off. Anywayz, here it is, uncut in all its glory.

Question: Customizing A New Desktop
( Veronica (my stage name :D ) has joined )
( Carson has joined )
Carson: hi. thanks for choosing gateway.com. my name is carson, and i will be your esales advisor. what brings you to chat today?
Veronica: Well, I was considering your Profile4, but also an iMac. Could ou enlighten me on why i should choose your system?
Carson: sure. one moment.
Carson: the profile4 is more powerful and upgradable.
Veronica: Like how upgradable?
Carson: you can add more ram, different video cards, larger harddrives, and all the "moving" parts, like floppy and harddrive are interchangable.
Veronica: How much RAM can it hold?
Carson: one moment. i'll check.
Carson: we will load 1024mb from the factory, but if you can find 1024mb sticks--it will recognize 2gb ram.
Veronica: That's twice as much as the iMac, I think. Why does it still include a floppy drive? I haven't used one in years.
Veronica: That's twice as much as the iMac, I think. Why does it still include a floppy drive? I haven't used one in years.
Carson: sorry for the "echo." sometimes chat does that.
Carson: we polled our customers, and most still want to use a floppy.
Veronica: What for? doesn't XP have CD burning support in it?
Carson: yes, i don't know what for. i haven't used one for a long time myself.
Veronica: What about legacy ports, like parallel and serial, I don't know of anyone that's used them in ages, why are they ijncluded also?
Carson: people still really want them on the new systems. most people still use these ports for their older printers and scanners.
Carson: we also include usb for the new printers, etc.
Carson: may i help you complete your purchase this evening?
Veronica: Not yet I'm still comparing these two systems. Wait a sec.
Carson: k
Veronica: Sorry, I still use dialup. It's slower than molasses. Almost done.
Carson: ok
Veronica: what the hell?
Carson: what?
Veronica: oh, never mind.
Veronica: oh and about dial-up, why do I have to have a modem ordered optionally?
Carson: you do on the base model; most people are now using broadband. but the modem is included in the more expensive models.
Carson: even purchase the modem, we give you more power, more storage for less $$$ than imac.
Carson: and we give you a path for future expansion if needed.
Veronica: Okay, I've got two similar models configured. The iMac at $1299 has a 700G4 , a 15"screen a 40gb hard drive, modem, ethernet and a GF2MX. Plus all the little software like iTunes, iMovie, iChat and so on and so on. The Profile for configures similarly, is 1880$, but doesn't include all that cool software. Help me!
Veronica: o9h, not 1800, 1188. sorry.
Carson: we don't have all the cool software, but we are $112 less, and we have a more powerful processor, and the ability to upgrade, what will you do if the harddrive malfunctions or you need more space on the imac???? with the profile4 you can install a larger harddrive.
Veronica: You can install a bigger harddrive on the Imac too, but it voids your warranty. Most people don't need even 40GB anywayz, oh and why is the maximim burn speed only 16x, the iMac's is 24x. I've burned at both speeds, and it;s noticably faster.
Carson: it won't void our warranty. i don't know why the max burn speed is 16x. are you going to make a decision this evening?
Veronica: Still thinking about it. Can I run Final Cut Pro on the Profile4. I use it a lot on my friend's mac and I was planning on geting it for my system, but I'd like to know if it'll work.
Carson: you'll have to check with the maker of final cut pro to see if it will run on xp. not familiar with the software.
Veronica: It's made by Apple I think. I really like it.
Carson: i don't know if it will work w/xp.
Veronica: Why do u use home? my parent have it on their PC and it's crashed about 8 times. I've got pro on mine and It hasn't crashed once.
( Veronica has exited )

ask about all-in-one computers from dell, compaq, etc...then ask what was the one in the TV commercial...

ask why they chose it specifically

ask about bundled software

ask about the moving display

Omigod, I just saw that ad about 30 seconds ago and it was frelling terrible. It starts off with the Profile4, then blabbers on that it can run thousands more software than the Mac and blah blah blah, then it does backflips over three iMacs, then moves the screen around like the iMac, except this is definately animation, it can't actually be done like that, but anywayz, it flips back over the iMacs, then turns towards them and spits it's CD-tray at them. Then the announcer says it's cheaper and then it ends. Frelling pathetic. I hope that's the last time I ever seen it. Frelling pathetic

BTW jello, ask them why they give the impression that the screen can move when in fact it doesn't and why no dvd burner

Virgil: Hi. Thanks for choosing gateway.com. My name is Virgil, and I will be your esales advisor. May I have your phone number in case we are disconnected?
carl: hello
carl: i'm interested in the profile 4 (i think that's what it's called)
Virgil: yes tahts a great system
Virgil: do you have certain specifications you need
carl: one of the features that really caught my eye is the adjustable monitor, does it have a good range of motion so i could use it while standing?
Virgil: yes it sure does
carl: does the entire arm move or just the monitor tilting?
Virgil: im checking
carl: thanks
carl: i'm patient. :)
Virgil: thank you carl
carl: no problem. thanks for the help. i haven't bought my own computer before so i want to make sure it's right
Virgil: i understand
carl: hehe, you probably are used to computer illiterate folks doing this all the time..
Virgil: im getting specifics for you carl
carl: alright, thanks
carl: i thought the moving monitor was a big feature... hehe. guess not everyone cares about that like i do eh? anyone else asked about it?
Virgil: it tilts back and forth
carl: vertically or horizontally?
Virgil: up and down
carl: ok, thanks
Virgil: vertically
Virgil: will that work?
carl: and what's the standard video card in it?
carl: yeah, that sounds good
carl: i saw it going all over the place in one of the commercials so i wasn't sure if that was real or not
Virgil: which model are you considering
carl: i'm not sure... what are the options?
Virgil: what is your price
carl: up to 2500 or os
Virgil: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ail.shtml
Virgil: heres a web site
carl: alright.
carl: that sounds good. how much does it cost to put in a dvd burner?
Virgil: the estimated date of arrival is around mid sept is that ok
carl: yeah, i guess
Virgil: i can get an external dvd burner
carl: oh, only external?
Virgil: would you like to place an order?
carl: hmm. don't really need two of them
Virgil: ok
carl: what's that other computer that's in the commercials with the profile?
carl: an apple something or other? what is that?
carl: (sorry for my lack of computer savvy)
Virgil: we sell the profile which is better
carl: oh, so the other computer is a different company? which is it?
Virgil: would you like to get a new gateway?
carl: what's the other computer in the commercial? how is the gateway better?
carl: just want to make sure i look at all the options. it's a lot of money i've been saving for a looong time
Virgil: then this is the place to be
Virgil: there's more software available for this profile
carl: that's good. how else is the other computer (what's it called??) not as good?
Virgil: the other is good we're better
carl: alright, but before i believe you, how come?
Virgil: heres a web site that explains it all
Virgil: http://www.etestinglabs.com/ma...teway.pdf
carl: oh, that is a pdf. not a website per se. i'll take a look
carl: ahh, the "imac". i thought it was something dumb sounding. hehe
carl: hmm. the "imac" has a dvd burner built in
Virgil: would you like to go ahead and order?
carl: can i look at the pdf?
carl: you get commission don't you? hehe
Virgil: we are 100% commission
carl: wow
carl: so no one had ever asked about the monitor tilting? i figured that'd be common knowledge.
carl: do you own a profile yourself?
Virgil: no
carl: can i ask what you use?
carl: hmm, this test doesn't seem fair
Virgil: have several
carl: why does the apple only have 256 MB RAM and the profile has more? wouldn't that affect the speed?
carl: doesn't that affect the speed?
carl: virgil my man. you there?
Virgil: I apologize, I am only qualified to discuss products offered by Gateway. Is there anything else I can assist you with today?
carl: but you couldn't answer my question about the gateway product even.
carl: how much is an external dvd burner?
Virgil: around 459 and we have free shipping on that
carl: wow
carl: 2000 + 460. 2460 for the profile with an external dvd burner. one sec...
carl: does it have a wireless network card?
Virgil: no but we can include one if you want
carl: how much?
carl: lay it on me brah.
Virgil: are we doing business here tonight?
carl: yes. how much for a network card?
carl: wireless that is
Virgil: it dosnt have one
carl: so i can't add one?
Virgil: yes it would be a usb connection do you have wireless now
carl: not yet, looking into it for my next computer though. my roommate has a laptop so it'd be handy
carl: usb connection? doesn't that have a wire?
carl: ?
carl: hello?
carl: virgil?
Virgil: would you like to order now
carl: did you not see my question about the wireless network card?
carl: how much would it cost for me to add it
Virgil: do you have wireless set up now?
carl: no
carl: but i want my new computer to be wireless capable
carl: i've just configured an imac at apple's site. it's 2350 with a dvd burner (superdrive?) and wireless card
carl: how much would adding wireless capability to the profile cost?
Virgil: i see it 89 with free shipping
carl: hmm. that puts me over 2500. what software does it have with it?
Virgil: check the web siter
Virgil: here i send you the link
Virgil: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ail.shtml
Virgil: this should answer alot of your concerns
Virgil: this a lot more powerful than that apple
carl: really? how so?
carl: what's the difference between windows xp and mac os x? (sorry for sounding dumb)
Virgil: windows is more widley accepted
Virgil: will that work
carl: oh that's good. is it based on "unix"? (i'm checking out the apple site about "os x") could i upgrade to os x on the profile?
Virgil: lets ge this on order carl
Virgil: heres the secured web site for your credit card information
Virgil: https://secure.webhelp.com/gat...=14452508
carl: the commercial said the profile was cheaper but i just configured the apple and it's cheaper. i still don't understand why i'd get the profile...
Virgil: carl i'm at the end of my shift if you like you may call me tommrow or i can call you and place your order now
carl: sorry i'mm still not sold on this.. the monitor doesn't move like it shows in the commercial. and it's not cheaper than the imac like it said. hmm
carl: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/71/wo/YTEjs1fWR78GTYx8Js1/5.7.0.3.34.1

Virgil: Thank you for the chat; I hope this information has answered your questions.
Virgil: it might not be an apples to apples comaprison

This may be for every PC sales chat site, but one thing I notice on all of these is that the saleman (or woman) seems to be desperate to get an order from you. That's how I felt at least. If it is only Gateway, then that telss you that they're getting kinda desperate. Anybody know how their financial state is now?

Oh, and one thing interesting about them is that say that they're only qualified to talk about Gateway products. I could understand it maybe if they weren't doing so many comparisons to the iMac, but on my first try, my tech said she'd never seen an iMac.

oh i definitely hear you... and what you couldn't tell in mine was that my dude took forever to find out if the screen tilted at all.... it was ridiculous. more than 10 mins

clearly not very well trained. not about their own products, and definitely not the competition they pitted themselves against... they did it to themselves

and yeah, the guy said 100% commission. so i feel a bit bad. i mean, no way i was buying obviously. so i did nothing but waste his time. hence his desperation to make a sale

that said..... find a new job, right? ha

"carl: i saw it going all over the place in one of the commercials so i wasn't sure if that was real or not"

hah. anyways... it got really good at the end. jacked him. booyah!

Hey I just went to Gateway's site myself.....saw the Profile featured.........& you know......when taking a good look at it........ it's really not that bad. Then I looked at the specs...... & it's a 2.66GHZ Pentium 4!!! ........Now I'm an Athalon fan (for PC's) ....... but a 2.66GHZ P4 ain't bad......not to mention the 512mb DDR SDRAM...... I am beginning to think this could be a good thing for Apple, because it might make them finally commit to upgrading their more stylish and compact hardware, not just the big PowerMacs........ lets face it .......a 700MHZ G4, and the G3 iBooks just don't measure up.

Oh & I'm a Mac owner too........ so I am not biased. IMacs, iBooks, and eMacs all need big performance upgrades right now...... and products like the Profile might just push Apple to make the necessary improvements sooner rather then later. For the record, I hate Gateway and would never pay for any of their products....... but I did enter to win one of the free Profiles they're giving away....I mean.....what the #ell........ it's free!!! lol

P.S. Ric Flair RULES........ not the poster of this thread........ but the guy with the white hair who goes WHOOOOOoooooo all the time!:D

Ric Flair always bleeds to death in the ring! Hulk Hogan rules too...... I was very happy to see the fans cheering him recently when he went back to the WWF. Though I haven't watched much after that....lol....

P.S. Getting back to the Profile....... besides what I've already said......... I was again checking the specs..... specifically of the Profile X...... and after seeing the 2.66GHZ P4 and 512mb DDR Sdram.......I was thinking that if they ever threw in a TI4600 Video card (Rather then integrated Gforce2....... and Soundblaster Audigy sound, rather then crappy integrated audio...... they might really have something there. Not as a real threat to the iMac, but a threat to large PC Towers in general. Too bad they couldn't get a standard Socket A, ATX board in that case.......then it would be easily upgradable in the future.........

Wow, If a lot of apple people did this it could really put a dent in Gateways sales! The reason they push you so much is because they are on commision and they longer you keep them online the less sales they can make. let's don't stop at Gateway! haha. :D

They didn't tell us anything about comparing the two. well then if there going to try and fight agains a foe one has to learn the know the enemy to beat them. looks like they dont know apple... so they dont pose much of a threat to apple. apple know thier enemy and they educate thier employers well on them... thats why apple has a strong respectible ad campaign right now. thats why they have a strong resepctible business period that has survived some serious crap. but i hear ya on your response.

We just got a company wide e-mail from Ted Waitt. This is ****ing hilarious, you guys have got to read it. Enjoy...

I teach my kids that it’s not right to fight, that you should make friends, not enemies. The business world is a little different. Business competition creates intense rivalries. I think it’s good to have rivals, as long as they’re outside Gateway, not among us. A good rival gives us a target, something to fight together. That’s what our business was founded on. The whole PC establishment was our target and we did everything we could to fight it together and bring it down. If you’ve never heard of Zeos or Northgate, it’s because Gateway fought those entities and won. In today’s world, it’s important to point out that having a rival isn’t personal. The individuals of those companies weren’t our enemies. In fact, I’m still friends with the founder of Zeos. It was just business.

To be honest, in the past few years, sometimes it’s felt like the rivals have been inside Gateway, not outside. But those days are over, starting now. We’ve worked really hard to build a new company that can compete with and beat anyone in this industry, and it’s time to start acting like it again. Our new Gateway Profile® 4 PC campaign is a departure from our past in that we’re going after a competitor by name. Apple’s been trying to claim leadership of a space that we basically created almost three years ago with our first Profile, and we’re not about to let them. We’re using hard facts – presented in a uniquely fun, engaging and honest way – to show that Gateway offers a superior product at a better price. The public reaction so far (except for the Apple disciples) says it’s working.

This is the first in a series of new external communications that will show the world what you already know: that Gateway is simply better than our competition. We’re not going to go after every one of our competitors by name. But whether it’s our products, pride, service, operations, or people, we’re just better than everyone else. Period. So let’s start acting like it, telling our customers about it and selling like it. And let’s join together to fight the rivals outside these walls, and win.

Have a safe and fun Labor Day weekend.

Ted

It really is not that difficult to provide good customer service. I've worked in call centers before and would never, EVER, say something like that to a potential customer.

If I was looking for a product, and the salesperson said that to me, I would run away as fast as possible.

iMac 1998
Gateway (Unknown Model Name) 1999
E-Machines (e-pc) 1999

Apple found about these (And they looked like a iMac)

The Legal Department found out about this and quashed it, they had to stop production, this is not the first time, someone has tried to take Apple' s Inovation away. Gateway is on its way out. According to the SEC (Security and Exchange Comission) Filings for the 10Q (End of Quarter Filing)

Gateway currently has about Two Million Dollars of Assetts
They Made about Three and a Half Million Dollars in Sales

in the Last Quarter they Lost about 17.8% of that (629,500)

they have about One Million Dollars in Operating Revenue (Positive Operating Expenses)
They have about 13 days in inventory on hand
And about 41 days left in Accounts Payable

Gateway Stock Holders lost about 523,000 for the Six Months Ending June 30th

Now what does this say about the company??? And the Finanical State?

God i love the openess of the Stock Market....
Stock Price at Open this Morning 3.75
Stock Price at Close this evening
3.50 (-7.89% -0.30$)

Ted Waitt (The dude who uses the cow for business advice) has bought about 10 Million Dollars worth of Gateway Stock Back 2 times in June.

If it keeps going down, within 2 or 3 weeks it will be below 1.00 and the company will be notified of a delisting to occour....

I dont think the new ad compaign is going to help at all

I'd be surprised if there wasn't some sort of memo/warning about people messing with them by now...then again, the cow might still be distracted by the godawful commercial with the dancing girls singing about the computers...*shudder*

yeah, i mean it basically seems like they all think the profile is crap. so if anyone asks about it, it's a tip off right away, even if they do what i did and don't ask about the imac right away

Check out this little QTVR thingy - go here & click on Product Tour right under the picture of the system. That screen's movin' all over the place, up and down anyway, and there is NO disclaimer.

Note of course the irony that they're using an Apple technology to show off their "better than Apple" computer...

Jello, it does move up and down, but it depends on how the books underneath it are positioned.
Put a book under the front, it tilts up.
Under the back, it tilts down.

Throw the whole thing out the window... then it's a long way down.

The screen does not move up and down. It only tilts back and forth approx. 5 degrees from center. If you want it to go up and down you need to put a book under it

After all, it's just a job. You can't expect them to really care about their products.

The Profile (is that the name of it? Doesn't Apple have a tm on the name Profile from the Apple II days?) is about what you'd expect from a PC maker trying to clone an imac. If you had to have a PC you could do worse. You could have a Dhell.

ok here it is:

Phoenix - Hi thanks for choosing Gateway.com. How may I assist you Today?

Compute - hi im considering both the profile 4 and the apple imac

Phoenix How may I assist you Compute?

Compute i want to shoot digital video, edit it, and burn it onto dvds

Phoenix What other requirements did you have for your new system Compute?

Compute thats mainly what i would be doing... i like to make movies

Compute I am a big fan of MS Office... can I run it on the Profile 4? What about Office on the iMac?

Phoenix Very nice....... would like to attempt that myself someday, you would want to move up to a full system for those type digital needs though Compute. I'd suggest either the 500x or one of the 700 series. I'm sorry I do not know if the iMac will work with Office, *wink.. i work for Gateway

Compute well i need to compare the two... i REALLY like and need the design of the Profile 4.... could I do video editing on that?

Phoenix the Profile does not have an option for the DVD-Ram you mentioned needing Compute, that is why I suggested moving to another system. Would you like me to show you one of the others?

Compute no... i need the design of either the Profile 4 or the iMac.... I heard the iMac can burn DVDs, which i absolutley need to do in a small space

Phoenix I understand Compute. I've heard nothing but good things about iMac's, I myself have never used one though, needless to say I have Gateway's in my home <smile>

Compute so then the best way to go would be the iMac because I can burn DVDs in a small space

Phoenix That would be a choice only you could make Compute, if you decide to go with more power and a bit better pricing, let me know, I'll do my best to guide you to a Gateway that will serve your needs. If you end up purchasing online, put my name (PHOENIX) in the Sales Advisor section, I can make sure you get a confirmation order number to track your order with. Not to mention, you will have a contact person, in the event you need help with your order or system.

Phoenix Good luck with your search!

Phoenix Enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend!

Compute one more question

Compute Is there any place where I can see raw power benchmarks, like MP3 encoding and video rendering of the iMac vs. the Profile 4? I dont care about PDFs or boot up time.

Phoenix I have not seen such a listing online yet Compute, but if you dont' mind standing by for a few while I search, I'll see what I can find for you.

Compute ok

Phoenix no luck so far, but bear with me, i'm still looking

Phoenix if all else fails, If you'd like to give me a number where I can reach you or an email address, I can continue searching and contact you when I find something

Compute no thanks... i think ive made up my mind - the iMac has a DVD burner built in, and its compact like the Profile 4, so I will get that, plus its cheaper with a build in DVD burner than the Profile 4 with an external one.

Phoenix I wish you Good luck with your search! Enjoy the rest of your holiday weekend!

** Strange - the guy actually accepted that I liked the iMac better and didn't try to hard sell the Profool 4.

I agree, but most of the people on this thread can't relate because they probably don't have jobs, that's why they have time to do these things!:D There are many reasons for people to own both a Mac and a PC, there is no need to be so fanatical about just one or the other. Like I said before, if they would get rid of the integrated audio and put a TI 4600 rather then a Gforce 2, Gateway would really have something........ the Profile X isn't a bad system anyway, if Gateway didn't target Apple they'd probably be able to get some Mac users who are looking to have a token PC in their homes.
