Right now, I am in the middle of a Online Chat Session with a Gateway Sales Advisor, I am going to post the transcript of the chat as soon as it becomes available, this guy doesnt know jack..

( Shon has joined )

( Wade has joined )

Shon: Howdy Wade

Shon: I have a couple questions about buying a Windows Machine over a Mac

Wade: Hello, welcome to Gateway.com. My name is Wade Whitmer and I will be your E-Sales advisor.

Wade: Sure how can I help?

Shon: How good is the new iMac like Profile better than a mac? and how is it for digital video editing

Wade: Oh my gosh

Wade: our system is sooo much better than the imac

Shon: but how is it better than the iMac?

Wade: it has excellent accessability for parts

Shon: ok,

Shon: What ports come on it

Wade: connectivity is better

Shon: Like USB? Firewire?

Wade: sure one sec

Shon: Why is the connectivity better

Shon: whats the maximum armount of ram

Wade: where the ports are located

Shon: that it can hold?

Wade: Shon

Wade: hold up

Shon: where are the ports located?

Wade: and let me answer one question at a time

Shon: ok

Wade: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ile.shtml

Wade: ok lets look at them

Shon: OK, i see it has the same size LCD as a iMac

Wade: max memory is 1024mb

Shon: A decent amount of Ram

Shon: But it doesnt have a DVD Burner like the Macs Have

Wade: max hard drive is 120g

Wade: you can do a combo drive for $100

Shon: And i have been talking to both Mac Users and PC Users and the Mac Users say you used a slowe version of Mac OS X

Shon: slower*

Wade: hahah I am sure they did

Shon: Does it have firewire?

Wade: yes 2

Wade: on the front

Wade: instead of hiding out in back

Wade: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...fig.shtml

Wade: here look at this

Wade: we clock speed faster than the IMac

Shon: but some people say clock speed doesnt matter,

Wade: we have long term expandability and they don't

Shon: All it means is you can push data through faster..

Wade: hahah if they don't have it yes

Wade: which means you can process your application faster

Shon: but what about the 20 data pipes the Pentium 4 Has, as compared to the 8 that a PowerPC G4 Has

Shon: I am soooo confused!

Shon: All i want is a computer that is best for editing the Movies I make

Shon: Does Apple's final cut pro work on windows?

Wade: well I would argue then that you should be looking at a traditional system

Wade: but if you want an all in one

Wade: we really do stomp Imac at this time

Shon: i have heard that FCP is the best digital video ediotr

Wade: FCP?

Shon: Ok, so what kind of Traditional System would you recommend

Shon: FCP= Final Cut Pro

Wade: at least the 500x

Wade: oh hmmm I don't know enough about them to really have a good honest opinion

Wade: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ail.shtml

Shon: ok, so i was reading the PC Test you guys did against the iMac

Wade: take a look at this system

Shon: why didnt you use Mac OS X 10.2?

Wade: which one?

Shon: in your tests

Wade: we did

Shon: you had a Adobe Acrobat File

Wade: Apple always complains that we don't use their application and so we did and we still beat them

Shon: It says you used 10.1.5 and 10.0.4

Wade: which test are you looking at?

Shon: http://etestinglabs.com/main/reports/gateway.pdf

Wade: ahh I just went there

Shon: Whats the difference between 10.1.5 10.2 and 10.0.4

Shon: sorry 10.1.4

Wade: hmm that is a good question

Shon: and what kind of Warranty would come with my systems

Wade: one sec

Shon: I want to buy 3 of them

Wade: well the limted warranty defaults at 1 year poarts labor and support

Shon: But i want them to be the best for my Digital Video Creation (I make snowboarding and skateboarding videos)

Wade: but you can upgrade to 3 years parts labor and life of the system support

Shon: Do you have bigger monitors, or Dual Monitor supoprt

Shon: and video capture cards

Shon: and how many hard drives will the 500x hold?

Wade: hang on a sec again I need to do one thing at at time

Wade: Now the reason we didn't use the Mac OS 10.2

Wade: is that it was a test between a windows speed test vs a mac speed test

Wade: after all you wouldn't be running a mac os on a pc

Shon: why didnt you use OS X 10.2 on the mac though is what i aqm wondering

Wade: it wouldn't likely have made a difference but we couldn't tell you as the test was done by an independant lab

Wade: they chose the most comparable OS

Shon: Oh ok.

Wade: so there are many reasons for a gateway over MAC not just the speed of processing although that should be important

Shon: oh ok,

Wade: Now on the 500x you can have 2 optical drives

Shon: but if i was to buy a gateway would i suffer from a Blue Screen of Deasth

Wade: hahah no you wouldn

Wade: oh and the 500x could hold an internal zip if you needed

Wade: oh and 2 hard drives

Shon: So your saying i would have the blue screen of death in windows? what about a memory dump

Wade: XP is MUCH more stable than all previuos OS and you have better chance of winning the lotterey than having blue screen

Wade: We do have bigger monitors

Wade: when you are looking at video capture do you mean like dazzle

Shon: Do you have a 23" LCD Display

Wade: no we have a 22 inch

Shon: and will it suport dual monitors

Shon: Do you know how often a Macintosh Crashes

Shon: ?

Wade: hahah no I give how many

Shon: and does Windows XP have protected Memory

Shon: I dont know I was asking, if you knew.

Wade: haha no I am not way up on Apple products and performance

Shon: oh ok.

Wade: an upograded vid card can support dual monitors

Wade: one analog and one digital

Wade: or 2 analog with an $11 converter

Shon: ok

Shon: What about wireless networking, do i have the option of that or do i need cables

Shon: strung all over my office, so my wife can castrate me, when she sees the ugly cables all over

Wade: you can add the wireless adapter

Wade: hahaha

Wade: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...fig.shtml

Wade: ok here is the customize page for the 500x

Wade: so you can see what changes are possible and how much they would cost

Shon: Ok, and is there an option for Zero Configuration Networking (The Computer Automatically recognizes any computer with in 50 feet of it? and can share data?)

Wade: this system has a DVRAM (burner)

Wade: It comes with Pinnacle 8.0 and Pinnacle express

Shon: Ok, and will Adobe Premere work good on it?

Wade: hmm it should one sec

Shon: And when Apple Releases the G5, will it be better to buy a mac or stick with windows?

Wade: There should be a pc version of it but I don't find it in our accessory superstore

Wade: Shon really I have to say I am partial so keep this in mind

Wade: BUT

Shon: Ok, I just want your opinions

Wade: with almost the entire industry making parts and software for a pc

Shon: I am not going to run to your Supervisor and tell him you Biased my Opinion.

Wade: I just can't imagine going with APPLE anymore

Wade: haha

Wade: no I just want to remind you that I know I am biased

Wade: It is sad because I hate to see monopolies

Shon: I need informed descisions from informed people, i dont know too much about computers, I do Digital Videos and use my computer to edit them, and check my emai

Shon: Do you know if there is a Microsoft Office suite for Mac OS X?

Wade: but these days it isn't true any longer that for graphics applications APPLe is strongest performer

Shon: or does this gateway come with office?

Wade: No there is not a mac version of Office suite, why would they make mac progams? Microsoft doesnt make anything for Mac

Wade: and all of our systems come with XP home

Wade: There of course aren't mac versions of windows

Shon: XP Home? I heard XP Home sucked more ass than a chinese crack whore, what about XP Pro do you sell that

Wade: haha yes we do sell it

Shon: Ok, and do you have a service like .Mac?

Wade: and yes like all OS releases it did have some bad press from techies

Wade: they of course were trying to make it do gymnastics it wasn't meant to do

Wade: No, We dont like to screw over our customers.

Wade: what is it?

Shon: ohh ok

Shon: Well I need to think this over some more,

Wade: sure no prob

Wade: I wish I was more help

Shon: Thanks for your help Wade, you have fun

Wade: hey you too

Wade: call me if you need anything

Wade: I hope I was able to help you and if you have any questions please contact me at: wade.whitmer@gateway.com or 1-800-846-2036 ext 56273. My Hours are Sunday through Thursday from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Central Standard time.

Wade: Go Go Gateway

Wade: (C:

Shon: Cheers mate!

Wade: see ya

This comment made me use the f word outloud:

>(wade) [Mac OS X 10.2] wouldn't likely have made a difference but we couldn't tell you as the test was done by an independant lab

Number 1: Even independent labs should be responsable and updated tests. OS X 10.2 is the latest update. If the test is not based on the current and latest versions of the Apple OS, than the test isn't worth much.

Number 2: I have not seen ONE COMPLAINT about OS X 10.2 being slower than anyone on OS X 10.1, especially since many people would do a fresh install. Actually, 10.2 is faster than the original OS X and 10.1 in boot time, and 10.2 maximizes what G3 computers can handle with incredible speed increases. Imagine what a G4 can do.

>(wade) No, We dont like to screw over our customers.

With the tests posted on the Gatelaid website, you and your company just did. Not only did you screw over customers, but you also made yourself look silly.

Example 1: Take a look at your hardware. Tell me: Was that an original idea? If so, who created it? That's right. Apple. Don't steal ideas from others. And, if you can't come up with them, don't come up with anything at all.

Example 2: Your tests are clearly obvious that you gave both computers easy tasks to perform. Tell me: How many people take pictures and want to save them on a computer? How many people like to edit those photos? How many people go into video editing? How much faster can you encode music on a Mac compared to a PC? Performing such tasks is hard work, and the iMac can do hard work.

Think again, Gatelaid. Don't screw with them Apples. :D :p

Now we have written confirmation that the people at Gateway are completely devoid of any useful knowledge. Wade obviously has not left the Gateway store for a while "No there is not a mac version of Office suite, why would they make mac progams? Microsoft doesnt make anything for Mac". He must have missed the pass 5 years. Oh really? You say there arent any mac versions of windows, damn i was wondering why i could never get this windows cd to install on my G4. Oh so the reason that they didnt use 10.2 is because it doesnt run on a pc, that makes sense.

I wish that i could go on gateways site and talk to one of the reps, but i feel dirty when i stray towards pc oriented pages. I have to go take a shower, cant get stench of gateway off, must scrub harder.

haha, very entertaining.

I'd love to see a mac version of that to see how well the Apple people handle such questions. Good support is tough sometimes, I wonder how long Wade has been working for Gateway?

I don't think they'll have to. Gatelaid is dying and this is their last gasp of air. They've been eclipsed by Dell and others with better design and support. They're not marketing the hell out of this for no reason. Cheers to the death of the cow! :D

Hell, why doesn't Apple make ads that use info like this? They could broadcast prank phone calls to let everybody know how stupid these pc companies are. I'd be laughing my ass off.

...no mac Office... ha! I still have a copy of MS Office 3.something from '92!

The milk has spoiled, so don't bother going there. :D

Now how young are most of you guys/gals? Teens/20s? And you're outsmarting a 30 somethin' year old sales guy. If Mac users get that support, then what support to PC users get?

At least the Apple salespeople know what in Jack's name they are talking about. On July 20 I went to the nearby Apple Store early and saw a Jaguar demo. A few people were watching, and the "nerd" doing the demo answered everyone's question, in most cases, better than I could answer.

Ok, some people have asked some questions, so i thought i would awnser

1. I hope you decide to buy a Macintosh: I already own 3. I have a Dual 1.0 GHZ, a TiBook 800 and a Powerbook G3 500.

I have been a mac user since i came out of the womb. My mother on the other hand, when i bought her a new computer a year or so ago, opted for "The Cow Spotted Boxes" (She lives in Idaho so it makes some sense) now a year or so later, she hates the gateway (she is tired of the Blue Screen of Death.... you know...the one our new friend wade said I had a better chance of winnning the Lottery than ever seeing on my computer) she is contimplating wether she wants an iMac or a G4.

My girlfreind/fiance/partner on the other hand uses a Dell Insperion 4100 Series that I got her for her Birthday, because she is still in college and didnt want a Mac.

I am in my Mid 20's,

Thanks for the replys to my post, it has been fun reading what people have said about the Commrades over at Gatelaid.

Feel free to email me if you have any questions!

We should start a new thread titled 'Post your Gateway online chat sessions HERE"

This is a unedited session, I swear. These guys are about as smart as a bag of rocks:

Question: Other

( Roger has joined )
( Maxine has joined )
Maxine: Hello Roger! Thanks for choosing Gateway.com. My name is Maxine, and I will be your eSales advisor.
Roger: how much does the screen move? Can I adjust the height and the angle?
Maxine: how may I help you today?
Maxine: which monitor do you have?
Roger: I'm asking about the Profile 4
Maxine: oh, no those screens don't move. adjusting height? sit it on top of a book or something
Roger: are you serious?
Maxine: it's not an adjustable screen like that. not like a steering wheel, sorry
Roger: Oh, okay, you compare it to the imac and I know you can move the screen higher/lower on it. Just thought I'd ask
Roger: can I upgrade the RAM myself or do you have to install?
Maxine: we would install
Roger: so I would have to send it back in if I wanted to upgrade the memory later? Is the same true with the hard drive?
Maxine: which Profile 4 are you asking about, Roger? Profile 4SE or 4X?
Roger: I haven't made up my mind yet...are the options different for either machine?
Maxine: yes, the 4SE has a Celeron processor and 4X has Pentium 4.
Roger: I know Maxine, my question was about upgrading later, if I want to add more memory after the purchase, would I have to send it back to you guys or could I install it myself?
Maxine: Memory 256MB DDR 266MHz 184-pin DIMMs expandable to 1024MB; on these types of systems, you can take to a Gateway Country Store to have them install more memory
Roger: so it isn't something I can buy and install myself, correct? Also, do you offer any video card upgrades?
Roger: And is there a DVD-R option?
Maxine: correct, and no there is no place for a separate video card or DVD-R
Maxine: http://www.gateway.com/home/pr...ail.shtml
Maxine: Here is the webpage for the Profile 4SE, for instance. Click "Customize" on the right by the price to see what changes can be made
Roger: OK, do you know what resolution the LCD is?
Roger: hello?
Maxine: 1024x768
Roger: on the 17"?
Maxine: 15"
Maxine: 1280x1024 on 17"
Roger: ok, thanks:rolleyes:
