I think it's because we're trying to get some work done so we can all slack off tomorrow afternoon.
Luckily, I had a browser window at the back of a stack of work ready to be refreshed with new posts, I like to see what's popping up.

it's going to be even worse as there's no stream, and live updates are looking like they're going to be a little thin on the ground. :(
the worse part is afterwards though, when all the winjers emerge complaining about whatever has been released, without fail and regardless of whether they're in the market for a new Apple product or not... everything's too expensive, not fast enough... blah blah blah, gets right on ones tits.

connect four it ain't but I'm sure I've just shown the first symptom of my new obsession.
yesh, you're right it is quiet, a little too quiet.
In a paranoid sense it makes me want to go and check for threads where there are a sneeky gang of Americans laughing at this Brit only (so far) thread.

Is there going to be anyone at the event with a laptop and irc?
I like that sort of coverage. I also hate the bit when the B'stards come out and take the shine off the new toys.
I like new toys, it's like that seasonal cycle effect, I even like being the one who opens a new Jar of coffee. I just like the old being refreshed with new, a little bit here and there a few items at a time. :)

There's not a lot of interesting, rumour related, excitement building threads.
Perhaps we're all afraid of being sued just in case we're right in our speculation...
On the other hand, there are lots of 'will they update x product since I want to buy one' threads... yawn!
Agreed on the 'just want to know what's new asap' point - I'm unlikely to buy anything that's announced but I'm looking forward to finding out what I can't have!
I do think it's a pity that there's no satellite feed to the Apple Store. It would have been fun to have a small Macrumors gathering at the back of the theatre followed by an inevitable whinge in a local pub!

Yeah, that means one of two things:
a) It's gonna be so great that they don't want to overload all the Apple geeks around the world.
b) It's gonna be a complete let down and they don't want their staff in store to take the brunt of the disappointment.
Place your bets!

Oddly, I'm less excited about this one than others in the past - maybe because I felt let down last year. I also noticed the surprising lack of activity. However, I'm willing to bet that tomorrow - tomorrow during and after the keynote especially - that the "server down" screens will make many appearances. I think I'll just lay low and browse Apple's site.
I'm still pissed that they aren't doing the feeds at the local Stores. Maybe you're right - don't want employees to bear the brunt of a bad keynote. Who knows? But it's sort of turned me off a bit (I'm sure I'll get over it ;)).

There really isn't much in the Apple product line that hasn't been discussed to death in recent posts. I guess the only possibilities for real surprises are PowerBook G5's or some product out of left field that no one could see coming.
Apple legal getting involved is either a complete smokescreen, or evidence that the rumors are spot on this year. I vote for the latter.
If the rumors about Q88 and the flash iPod are close to accurate, there isn't much left to discuss there at all, apart from actual spec's and price points.
I also think the news that there will be no live feed has taken a lot of wind out of our sails. As excited as I am about the keynote, I'm equally bummed about having to play catch up. As tightly as Apple wants to control information this time out, I'm curious about whether they will attempt to block cell and wireless transmissions during the keynote.

Unfortunately, many of those lurkers become members, and then continue not to contribute anything (look at the number of members with fewer than 10 posts, or even 0 posts). To me, that's more annoying than lurking as a non-member. At least they're not pretending to contribute.

Of course I forgot that political posts and wastelanded posts don't count. Many of those members likely posted at some point but those posts were subsequently either discounted (spam, wasteland), or never counted in the first place (political). So perhaps we don't have quite as many "non-contributors" as we think. But they still aren't contributing to the Mac discussion...

I'm sorry to hear that many of your posts have been ignored.
Many members (myself included) tend to pop on for a while and view the newests posts (http://forums.macrumors.com/search.php?do=getnew) and then go away for a bit if nothing's there. If you post at a time that someone who knows enough to help isn't looking, your post will often fall off the radar unseen. It isn't that you're being ignored, just likely that no one who can help sees the post.
Also, a lot of people who ask for help don't thank those who help them (and many, many do thank us - just not everyone), so I wouldn't read anything into that either.

I’ve been getting a ton of “forum busy” messages too, but it looks like there’s just ~1300 browsing MR right now, which doesn’t seem like much when you think about all the massive rumors for this upcoming MWSF. It looks like MR hit a record of ~2600 prior to MWSF last year, so yeah, it does seem oddly “quiet” considering we’re just 18 hours away.
