Ok, it only took five years but my father in law is finally switching to a Mac. He is a videographer and as such will be buying a Dual 2.0 G5 in the very near future. Now, he has tasked me with finding the software he wants. So, this is what I will be needing. If you have it cheaper than I can find on eBay I'll take it.
Da List:
1. MS Office Suite
2. Adobe Photoshop
3. Final Cut Pro HD
4. DVD Studio Pro 3
5. Motion
If you have any other software/hardware that you think would be useful to someone doing proffessional grade video editing please give me a post. Thanks for the help.

See if you can find someone selling the Production suite as you should be able to save some money there.

If you're a student too, then you can get the production Suite REALLY cheap. I'm sure your dad would like that. :)

The only problem with the student version is that the license doesn't allow you to make money off the software. What I would do is buy a Final Cut Pro 1,2 or 3 license for cheap off of eBay legally then use that to buy the UPGRADE of the production suite for $699.

hardware wise, he should definitely have an external firewire 400/800 harddrive (http://www.lacie.com/products/product.htm?pid=10025) for a scratch disk, and maybe an audio/video digital converter (http://www.pricegrabber.com/search_getprod.php/masterid=650127/search=canopus%20advc) for converting his clients footage.

Excellent idea. May I direct you to my Final Cut Pro 3 for sale (http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=108234) ad?
