From CNN (http://money.cnn.com/2005/01/10/news/fortune500/mcdonalds_coffee/index.htm?cnn=yes):
McDonald's coffee may go gourmet
USA Today says restaurant will compete with 7-Eleven and Dunkin' Donuts for share of $8.9B market.
January 10, 2005: 8:00 AM EST
NEW YORK (CNN/Money) - McDonald's may soon be going upscale with its coffee, according to a report Monday.
USA Today said the world's largest fast food company is set to test and then offer premium java at all of its 13,000 restaurants either later this year or early 2006.
No further details, such as the coffee brand, the price, or an exact roll-out date, were available.
...
Oh, yeah. When I think "gourmet coffee", I think "7-Eleven and Dunkin' Donuts".
No matter how good the coffee beans are, Micky D's will find a way to burn it to the same carbonized goo that they currently offer.

That is surprising, thought that McDonald's was the top it it's field. There shops are always busy. I also wouldn't think of McDonald's when I wanted a good cup of coffee. Starbuck's is my favorite, the best around IMHO.

McD's in Canada already offeres "gourmet" coffee. Its called McCafe. Its not bad but you gotta make sure its fresh.
But nothing beats a Tim Hortons coffee.. NOTHING....

Oh, yeah. When I think "gourmet coffee", I think "7-Eleven and Dunkin' Donuts".
It's all relative. That is, when you're eating an Egg McMuffin or Hotcakes with Sausage on a styrofoam platter, pretty much anything will taste like "gourmet coffee."

It's not bad but you gotta make sure it's fresh.
My point exactly - it never seems to be fresh when I'm forced to get it (long trips, no good options). It's like some new quantum law that states that McDonald's coffee will always taste as though it has been on the burner for four hours, no matter when you buy it.

So if I spill some hot gourmet coffee on myself, do I get to sue for douple the money.

"Always fresh is Tim Horton's!"
grrrrrrrr.........it gets stuck in my head for days when I hear it. Arg.

I'll second that. Tim Hortons coffe is best cup of coffee I have ever had at a restaurant.

Well seeing as though I think McDonalds coffee is probably the worst coffee I have ever had...Anything would be an improvement.
Though I usually just make my own at home, and bring extra to work in a thermos

Well, ridicule me if you like, but I love Dunkin Donuts' coffee.
I get coffee from there every morning.
Wouldn't touch Mickey D's coffee even if it was all there was.
I'll drink Starbucks, but I'd rather have Dunkin Donuts
I don't know that I would call it gourmet, but I would call it good!

Dunkin' Donuts coffee? I suppose you'd rather toast frozen waffles than make them fresh? You probably don't even own a Mac because, heck Windows XP is pretty good, right? Sheesh.
Aw, you know I'm just kidding. Heck, I prefer a good cup of coffee over some latte crap any day.

Ouch... you really know how to hurt a dawg!
I just think Starbucks is too bitter. DD is much smoother.
Now if I want something with a bite, I'll opt for Starbucks and pay the premium price for it  But for my money and taste, its DD. I could care less about the "image" or anything else. I just want it to taste good, wake me up and not break the bank!

That would be because Starbucks actually brews with something called coffee beans. ;)
DD is smooth because, well, it's apparently just water with brown coloring added (don't want to think about that). When I drink my Starbucks venti black-eye (20 oz coffee with two added shots of espresso), I know I've had some coffee. When I drink DD "coffee", I can never be sure.

Isn’t that called a “red eye?” Or is that just your traditional post-brawl drink? ;)

FWIW, 'Dawg, I'd rather drink Dunkin Donuts coffee than Starbucks, too. Starbucks is okay, but I'm a regular coffee kind of guy. That froufrou candyass whipped cinnamon mocha latte mumbojumbo stuff is too darn pretentious and expensive for me! ;)

Here, a "black eye" is coffee with two added espresso shots, and a "red eye" has one.
It's not "official" terminology, so I'd imagine it varies regionally.

There, there, Dawg - I'd never think to mess with a man's coffee. I was only messing with your choice of Dunkin' Donuts' coffee-type hot beverage. ;)
And I'm secure enough with myself and my image to drink Starbucks without feeling pretentious - but I only get it a few times a week - coffee is expensive when it's the real thing! ;)

I agree. Coffee should not be prepared with anything except, well, coffee. Although I do add a bit of cream and sugar... it's just too harsh otherwise. ;)

OK, to be honest, 99% of the reason I drink Starbucks is that the barristas (sp?) at both of the ones I go to (1 a few blocks from my house, one a few blocks from work) are funny and beautiful and they like my iPod; at least one has an iMac.
So, while I do think the coffee tastes better, I have ulterior motives.:)

And one other thing - I'm trying to lose weight. Well, it'd be more accurate to say I'm trying not to gain weight, and losing some would be nice. As much as I don't really like DD donuts, I will get a giant coffee roll if I go there. Maybe something else.
At Starbucks, the coffee's enough.

Hey, when I bring my own 16oz mug, the coffee with two espresso shots is $2.50 or so. Plain coffee's a buck and a half. So it isn't all that bad....
Plus, they have me hooked on it now. Cute employees to draw me in, massive, elephant-killing doses of caffeine to addict me. What can I do?

At DD, you can afford to get a coffee roll, and a box of munchkins for the office to make you a hero and still come out better!
And my wife doesn't like me around those cute things at Starbucks.
Remember, I can't have a Faith Hill desktop!
She doesn't mind the ladies of DD, because they look like Waffle House waitresses.

Just kidding. :p
My wife just conveniently makes me order a drink for her as well when I go so they'll know I'm taken. And often I need to bring my 4 year old. Jokes on her (the wife), though, because her non-fat non-foam chai tea lattes take forever to make, and I get to chat with them the whole time - and they love my daughter! I'm happy, because they laugh at my dumb comments and ask Mac questions, and no one loses. Thank God the really beautiful ones are near work, where she never goes. :D But the most interesting, and still devastatingly cute, one is right near home. So, maybe a "couple a week" is an underestimate. I probably go nearly every day.
And, BTW, I don't want to be tempted by a donut....

Yeah, Timmy's is the best, and I don't even drink coffee! ;)
Lets put it this way......there are some cities in Canada where a Timmy's is located every 3 blocks, like in Hamilton. Their selection of muffins is the best and taste the best, and their prices are great. You can get a medium coffee and a muffin for around $1.50 USD, so it's quite a steal when it all tastes good. :)

Average? You must be phenomenally lucky to live in an area with such amazing coffee offerings that Starbucks is average - meaning that you've got places which balance out McDonalds, DD, 7-Eleven, etc. so well that Starbucks falls into the "average" category.
Or maybe the Starbucks out there just suck. But, around here, they're pretty good.
Edit: I've had better coffee too, but only rarely; nowhere here has it that I've found. But I've had too much god-awful horrible coffee to consider Starbucks anywhere even vaguely near to "average".

When I go into a Starbucks or some other "elitist" coffee establishment I get a mental image of that Samuel Adams commercial with the severely beautiful blond bartemptress (ought to be a real word, imho) who, with petulantly raised eyebrows alone, practically dares you to select a favorable brand, as if you might have a chance with her if only you knew what to order.
"Samuel Adams, eh? I am mildly impressed. Now lick my boots, dog!"
Hmmmm, is Dunkin' Donuts coffee just the Dell of the coffee world?

I'm a tea man myself. I can go for coffee once in a while, but it's pretty rare - and when I do, none of this black-eye stuff for me - I care for my stomach lining. It's usually either a double-double or a latte, depending on what sort of establishment I find myself in.
Having written that, I am overcome with an incredible desire for a double-double and a maple dip... Curse you Timmie's!

There was a popular bar in downtown Baltimore, where the parking lot for M&T BAnk Stadium now sits, called Hammerjack's. I used to frequent the establishment back in the days of 80's hair bands. Saw lots of great shows there...NIN...Dream Theater...Fates Watrning....Joe Satriani.....ahhh, memories....but I digress.
As the name suggests, it was a rock 'n' roll bar all the way. The female bartenders there would drive a poor (or middle class) boy crazy, with the way they talked to you, dressed to kill, and danced on the bar. It's where we came up with the title of bartemptress.
It works equally well for a coffee bar, I expect. Particularly yours. :)
