My fiance was able to change her Apple ID from her university email to her gmail but the option to change my Apple ID is grayed out from the main Apple ID portal. I can't even select it. I want to change it from one MobileMe account to another. Certain pages seem to let me change it but I just wanted to make sure that I wasn't just creating a new one cause of all the iTunes content, Game Center account, etc that is linked to my current one..

Or can I even change it to another address like my gmail address?

Sorry but I don't think you can:

"If you'd like to change your Apple ID, go to appleid.apple.com. Please note that some Apple IDs, such as a MobileMe or iChat accounts, can't be changed."

So what is so special about a MobileMe account that won't let you change it? When I changed it for my fiance, did it actually just create a new account?

Your appleid is pretty much written in stone. You can change the email address associated with it, but you cannot change the id.

Back when I thought I was not going to renew my .mac account, I looked into changing my apple id. I was told I couldn't but I could alter what email address it was tied too.

Seemed kind of odd for me, since my .mac email address is my appleid. I'd still be using that even if I didn't resubscribe to .mac (now called mobile me). I ended up renewing, as it was just easier.

Sort of a work around that may do the trick for you... you get up to five "alias" emails with the MM account. Just create a new email address as an alias and it will get sent to the main account.

I created another Apple ID using my gmail address. It actually allows me to change it though when I go to manage my account. If I change it, is it just creating a new Apple ID or is it actually changing the ID for that account? Are you saying it just creates a new account?

Sadly you (and I, and others) are out of luck in regards to this. I spoke with Apple about using my MM user name for my iTunes/AppleID account but was told that I could not do so as the MM user name/e-mail automatically creates a new account with Apple in respect to iTunes and the online store.

Would be nice if Apple could invest some time into coming up with a fix which would allow for new members of MobileMe to merge their old iTunes into their MobileMe user name without losing their purchases on iTunes.

Totally agree. I am in the middle of untangling my own hellish mess of accounts now and I think it is ridiculous that this is so hard. I started buying music on iTunes back in 2005 when I was a PC user. Created my first appleid at that time. Two years later, was prompted by iTunes to create a second AppleID, which I did. Then last month when I became a Mac person and subscribed to MobileMe, the guy in the store prompted me to create a MobileMe ID and never said a WORD about ANY of the following:

* Your MobileMe ID cannot EVER be changed, so think carefully and be sure you pick a name you like and can live with
* If you already have an Apple ID, you will have to figure out the relationship between your AppleID and your new MobileMe ID
* Consolidating accounts is an absolute BITCH.

Would have been nice if the sales person had said something like, "Do you have any Apple IDs already? I'd like to make sure your accounts are all well-coordinated so that you can have the smooth, seamless Apple experience that you want."

Are you listening, Steve Jobs?
