I've removed the hard drive from my old powerbook g4 and want to use it as an external hard drive for extra space for my iMac. Does anyone know what kind of hard drive enclosure I should get? Are some not compatible? I want one that's cheap and easy to install the hard drive in so I can just plug it into the usb and clear it. Any help?

This is the Hard Drive I have.

is this enclosure good?

http://www.google.com/products/catalog?q=hard+drive+enclosure&hl=en&client=safari&rls=en&prmd=ivs&resnum=3&biw=1182&bih=878&um=1&ie=UTF-8&cid=8885693598983377826&ei=uIPdTJyeOMWAlAfgs-XYDA&sa=X&oi=product_catalog_result&ct=result&resnum=7&ved=0CJkBEPMCMAY#ps-sellers

what exactly should I be looking for to be sure it is compatible.

This OWC one is pretty good, and I know some who have them and love it.

It's a little more than the one you're looking at. OWC also has other types of connections (FW400, etc) if you want, but they are a little more.

Neither of those enclosures will work for your drive, as the drive is an IDE interface and the enclosures are SATA. Look for an IDE drive enclosure.

What does that mean IDE interface? If I find an enclosure that is compatible with and IDE interface hard drive will I be able to just plug it into my USB port on my Mac and use it for storage?

IDE is a type of connector used in older computers. Almost all computers now use a SATA connection. Because you want to use your old PowerBook hard drive you will need to find an 2.5" external enclosure that supports IDE drives. Any of these should work fine. That's exactly what you need.

Good to know. I have an older HD that came out of my G3 Lombard, and I had not really thought of getting some use out of it. Thanks for the info!!!
