View Full Version : Web Hosting (why does no one offer WebDAV?)

Hello all,

Some friends and I want to go in together and get some webspace that isn't blogger. However I seem to be running into problems finding ANYONE acceptable.

A Small Orange (http://www.asmallorange.com) has great reviews, but does not offer WebDAV; we are Mac users, we want to be able to use whatever site we pay for as an iCal .Mac replacement. ("So You Want to Run an iCal Server" (http://www.afp548.com/articles/Jaguar/webcal.html)) WebDAV is non-negotiable.

Additionally we would _like_ to be able to pay a little extra to get our own IP and be able to run a small IRC server to facilitate communicating amongst ourselves. We like ProFTPD and would like to be able to run that for anonymous and arbitrary user FTP.

Numbers wise, 2.5GB disk space 60 GB bandwidth for $20 is fine (the "Large" plan from ASO).
Does anyone know where we can get that and have WebDAV (and ideally the right to run arbitrary server applications)?

[EDIT: Why are all of you so eager for ASO given its utter lack of any of a couple features that any Mac owner would reap many benefits from having in their site?]

It supports WebDAV but I haven't used it.
Right now I'm on their plan and I get 2400 MB and 120 GB of transfer for around $9 a year. I got in a a special deal to get this for their 7th anniversary.
You may still be able to get in on this if you choose their "crazy domain insane" deal and for the promo code enter "777". If you can't get the deal that I got, their $7.95 per month with free domain registration is still pretty good.

I recommend DreamHost (http://www.dreamhost.com).

Their basic plan ("Crazy Domain Insane") currently has 2.4 GB disk space, 120 GB bandwidth, and WebDAV access for $10/month ($8/month if you prepay for two years).

How do either/both of you feel about these people? (Dreamhost)

I ask because their plans are excellent, making me wonder what the catch is. Why would anyone choose A Small Orange over them?

The code was still valid as of an hour ago. ~$9 for one year. Amazing.

They're ok. Decent uptime, but the main thing is the price. $9 a year with domain registration. You can't beat that.

is this a lock you in at $9 per year deal, or is this a $9 for the first year deal?

I'm pretty sure it's $9 for the first year and $120 for the next year. Though I don't think anything would stop you from canceling at the end of your billing year and resigning up.
I've only been on this plan since October 04 so I don't really know.

I also use dreamhost and got in with the $9.24/year promo, I am extremly happy with what I got for the price. When I signed up 4 months ago, I got 800MB and 40GB trans but they recently tripled all the plans so I now get 2.4GB and 120GB trans without haveing to pay more. Hopefully they still have the promotion going when my first year is up.

Also for dreamhost, when you enable WebDAV on a directory, you can no longer log into it with ftp so that has prevented me from using their WebDAV feature as ftp access is important to me.

I have no major complaints. I love the web configuration tools, though sometimes it takes a little too long for changes to be processed.

I've never used the WebDAV functionality, so I can't comment on that.
