Looks like new powerbooks very soon

Just thought I would post this separatly so everyone can see it. I have been looking around and it looks like new powerbooks will be comming out very soon. See the thread below.

It is a rather long thread, but towards the end people are saying that most places are sold out of powerbooks. Most apple stores have significant waiting times for BTO powerbooks. People have been calling around and a lot of the customer sevice people they have talked to say that they are out of powerbooks, and when they go to check when they will be back in stock, bring up no info. This would lead me as well as many other to believe that apple will be releasing new powerbooks most likely within the next week (I'm putting my money on next Tuesday). It seems like every time apple is about to release new powerbooks, all the stores are out and don't know when they will be back in, all the apple websites start to delay shipping times, etc. Anyway, just thought I would throw this out there for those of you that are on the verge of purchasing. Just wait a few more days.
 
I noticed the same thing, powerbooks are being closed out. An update is close, but I doubt it will be significant.
 
Yeah I agree completely. I really need a powerbook and I am not too concerned about getting the updated ones or not. I just need one as soon as I can but I really want the 5400 RPM Hard Drive so I ordered a BTO on Tuesday. The estimated ship is mid next week. If the new powerbooks come out then I will just change my order and if not then I have my powerbook early next week. Either way it is a win/win situation for me. If I miss the update then I will still have my 5400 RPM 80GB HD and a fast enough processor so I won't be too hurt. If the new books come out before my order ships then YAY! Good observation on the stock levels. I would not have thought of that 😉
 
My questions is:

If Apple had plans for a new PowerBook in place, why wouldn't it have been mentioned on Tuesday during the keynote?

I would suspect that the specs for the upgraded PowerBook will be underwhelming (small speed bump), and would have generated negative buzz. Better to wait a week or two so that the Mac Mini and iPod Shuffle get to "hog" the publicity.

Nope, Apple does that all the time - having a keynote and then releasing updates to other products lines in the following weeks.
 
It looks like the only apple store that has same day shipping is the US store, and people are claiming that if you get a BTO the est. ship is not until next week. All the other apple stores are 1-2 days or 3-5 days shipping. I think apple will ship you the new model if you ordered an old model and the new one is released before the old one ships. Not 100% sure on this, but this could be why all the PB are shipping after next tuesday.
 
I think pretty much anything you order from the store now is diverted to the 18th. Even the non powerbook items. Yesterday, my school store ordered some $30,000 worth of stuff, and none of it will ship to the 18th. So it probably has nothing to do with supply.

Thanks for the heads-up dude, I've been torn about what to do and this helps. Hopefully we'll see an upgrade in the graphics card - although I'll be impressed if Apple can fit an ATI9800 or the new Geforce Go 6800 (currently the fastest mobile solution) into the Powerbook's form factor.
 
I hate to be the one to say this because I want new PowerBooks as much as anyone, but can't this just mean that Apple is clearing out inventory of PowerBooks (and other computers) that have iLife '04 bundled to replace them with new inventory that comes with iLife '05?

It's kinda amazing how Apple has built such a loyal fan base. I can't remember the last time (or ever?) I heard this many people excited about a new Dell coming out. I gotta tell you... I'm really excited about switching over... just... need... new... PowerBooks.

Anyways, I really, really hope I'm wrong and the new hardware upgrades do come out next week.
 
Ok, I called apple this morning to try to get some answers on why my PB that was ordered on the 11th showing a 1-3 day time to ship is showing the 18th as its ship date. The following exchange took place....

Me: "I was wondering why my order is experiencing such a long delay? Is there an update coming or something that is pushing my order back?"

Apple Specialist: "Um... no, no. The reason it is delayed.... is because they put orders in a list of machines ordered. Then they are built in the order received so it could ship anywhere from the 13th to the 18th." (please note that the 13th was yesterday ;-)

Me: "Ok, well about iLife 05. When that is released will I be able to order an upgrade for my PB for a discounted rate?"

Apple Specialist: "No, I'm sorry iLife 05 is only compatible with G5s"

Me: (in a very confused voice) "Um... ok, thank you"

Now, we all know that iLife is not restricted to only G5s because it is shipping on the new Mac Mini's. So, judging from the very confused nature of the apple specialist I am becoming very curious about what is happening over there.... Just thought I would share 😉

I've figured it out... the Mac Mini actually contains the G5 processor that will appear next week in the new Powerbooks!
Hehehe... 😀
 
Extended build time on PB's

The usual build time of 1-2 days has been changed to 7-10 days on the 15''PB w/SD, on the Apple Australia website.

I pray that this is yet another sign indicating that there will be some kind of update to the PB line within the next 2 weeks!!

I'm getting so sick of waiting that if nothing comes out soon i think i'll get the 14'' iBook instead 🙁 (the powerbook is just so sexy), but i just can't justify paying so much for something that hasn't been updated for 9 months.

I suppose i'll just have to wait like everybody else wanting a powerbook.....I feel your pain.

BTW Many countries seem to be experiencing price drops due to the exchange rate of the US$, why haven't we seen any in Australia as the aussie dollar is now worth almost double than wat it was about 2 years ago ?
 
I know this has been mentioned before, but you can now add the Apple Canadian store to the extended lead time list... The standard lead time has been 1-3 days for pre-configured models and 3-5 days for any BTO (I played around with a few configs). I just added an 80GB drive to the 1.33GHz 15" and got a lead time of 10-15 days. First time I've seen this on the Canadian store.
 
I just called the apple developer store in the US and asked the lady if they came out with a new powerbook, and if I placed an order for the current powerbook, if they would send me the current one I ordered, or a new one. She said that if they are comming out with a new one before your order ships, they will put your order on hold and send you the new one. I decided to place my order, as if there were not updates on this next Tuesday I would need to order anyway. I ordered a 15" 1.5GHz 128MB VRAM 5400 HD, and my estemated ship is on or before 1/21/2005. The apple store US says est. ship is 1-3 days on BTO models, and 1/21/2005 is 3 days after next Tuesday (when they would probably release powerbooks if they were going to). I figure this way, if a new powerbook comes out I get the new one and I am first in line for it, and if a new one does not come out, I still get a powerbook. Although I would like to wait until the new one comes out so I surly get one, I am in need of one right now so was forced to place my order. Anyway, seems about as close to a win/win situation as you can get to with apple.
