Oh man, can Time magazine be any more irrelevant? What a load of crap.

www.espn.com said:
Other finalists this year include President Barack Obama (the 2008 winner), Lady Gaga, Sarah Palin, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, conservative commentator Glenn Beck, Afghan President Hamid Karzai and Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.

Also on the list: The trapped Chilean miners who spent more than two months underground before finally being reached and rescued in a gripping story that was covered worldwide.

Other than the Chilean miners, can't say that I'm impressed with any of the other nominees either.

Although, I was impressed by LeBron's reaction to this.

www.espn.com said:
"That's just crazy," James said. "What those guys did, the courage and what they stood for, I should be nowhere near that list. Nowhere near it."

it is a popularity contest because i think the person of the year is probably some mother out there working 16 hour days trying to raise her child alone somewhere.

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert eh? I can see that. They did some really great stuff this year (Well for awhile actually).

Lebron... meh, he made a whole state burn his jerseys... that's something.

It's all about who was talked about most in the media and elsewhere, and on that criteria, this idiot deserves it.

Being from NE Ohio, I think the inclusion of Lebron is absolutely ridiculous. Actually, it'd be ridiculous no matter where I'm from.

I could see Palin or Beck as person of the year, as long as that year is 1885.

I guess you can add this to the list of things I don't care about and am likely one of the few. Person of the Year or not ... the only thing that matters is that he is hardly a person of the year.

Lady Gaga or Chilean Miners for their unstinting services to the global news, media and advertising industry. In comparison, LeBron James is a small town story.

Half a million people ain't that small. 😉 (There I go again, being defensive about Cleveland...)

Lady Gaga is fashionable, but does that make one Person of the Year? I suppose the criteria rests mainly on recognition and publicity. Under those criteria Gaga is certainly a strong candidate, but the Chilean mine accident was probably the most compelling human story.

Plus, the Chilean Miners have more balls than Gaga is reported to have.

I like them as THE choice.

I think it will come down to either the Chilean Miners or Sarah Palin winning Person of the Year. They were the single two biggest influential forces of the year. Nobody else on that list had as great of an impact.

Sorry, but I don't see how getting trapped in a mine makes you person of the year. I followed the story with interest and was thrilled they all made it out Ok, but I'd give "person of the year" to someone who actively did something great, not just someone to whom something happened.

The Person of the Year isn't about doing good work or what have you, it's for the person who had the biggest impact on world news. I'd say the miners had a pretty damn impact.

I don't even know who Lady Gaga is 😱

Musta been a slow year 🙄

he i don't know who james LeBron is or what he did

that said it's not important to do something great.. with both hitler and stalin (twice) on the list

If it is by news popularity ...

Must be Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Too many accomplishments, a couple of items to mention are Re-elected president of Iran. Dedicated to a Nuclear Energy program, to reduce country's dependency on fossil fuels. Always on the news. Very carismatic and charming in the 60 Minutes television program.

WRONG!

This stopped being true after Adolf Hitler was denied "Person of the Century."
