Is it possible to play a DVD on the iMac and use AirPlay to stream the video to an Apple TV?

Doubt it as DVDs don't play in itunes, but in dvd player. You can. Rip the dvd and put it into iTunes and then I bet it'd work.

∧∧∧ - I think he's right.

You might see DVD player in Lion get an Airplay update... but I think for now ripping is your only option.

Thanks! That really stinks as I can't decide between getting a Blu-Ray player with Netflix for my room or an Apple TV. I was hoping the Apple TV because I don't really have that much room to work with since the Dish Network receiver is so freaking big.
