For awhile now, the superdrive in my mini has been malfunctioning. Won't read a DVD or CD on the first try, and when it finally reads it, it's after a long time of spinning.

Anything I can do to diagnose or fix it short of replacing the drive?

I have the same machine. Same problems too. Took it to apple store today. 2 weeks past apple care ran out and theyre still replacing it for free. Sweetness! Otherwise it would cost 150 to replace.

Super Drives Aren't Super

Sadly, Apples Optical drives aren't known for
being the most reliable. My Super Drive was
replaced once under warranty then again by
me out of warranty. Well, it failed again so I
now use an external Optical drive. If (when)
it fails again just buy an inexpensive Samsung
or Sony USB drive.
