Slow connects in Mail

Am I the only one who notices that Mail is noticably slow to connect and retrieve mail from servers? On the same network and connection it takes Mail about 3x as long to connect and retreive mail from a server than Outlook Express on my PC. Is there a reason for this?

I have Mail access the servers for Gmail and it works fine for me. Just takes about 5-7 seconds.

How long does it take to get your mail in Mail in relation to Outlook, time wise.

Mail=18sec
Outlook=3sec
This the time it takes until they start downloading.

Is there a reason for this?There are several posisble causes here.

Are the machines plugged into the switch on the LAN? Are the network settings on both machines set correctly? Are the settings in the Mail programs correct?

Could you have missed something? Are you timing them correctly?

I should add that I don't see times that long in Mail myself.

I beginning to think that my ISP is just optimized for Outlook.
