Interesting to note that this article (and many others) use the term "digital music" to mean music downloaded from the internet, despite the fact that digital music has been available on CD for over 20 years.

Looks like the high street's music sales are numbered. Legal download sales outsold the high street sales for the first time week on week in the UK a couple of weeks ago. If those sales are set to double there won't be many people buying CD's before long.
It's interesting that this surge in downloads happened just after Christmas. My guess is that it's people with new iPods switching away from CD's so we can expect another big surge with the shuffle.
Also I was wondering how long it'll be before the next Apple/artist promo? The shuffle once it's through it's introduction phase seems the ideal vehicle for artists to brand by a shuffle for $99 or a Britney Album+bonus tracks on a preloaded shuffle for $110.
I'm sure artist would prefer to be linked to a cheaper model for maximum sales.
