Deleting bookmarks in Safari, MacBook Pro

I've followed the usual instructions for deleting bookmarks but they keep showing up again every time I bring up Safari again. I've shut down the computer and reinstalled Safari without resolution of the problem. My OS is OS 10.6. Thanks
