Hi,

I'm going to be buying a USB2 external drive caddy to allow me to use my old hard drive from my Windows XP machine with my PowerBook. The only thing that worries me is that the partition on the drive is NTFS formatted. Is this going to cause any problems with my PowerBook getting the data from the drive, with permissions etc? Or should it be plug-and-play ;)

I can access NTFS shares over the network, but I always have to type a username and password from an account on the Windows machine to get access to the share.

Thanks in advance :)
J.

You can read NTFS but not write to it :(

When you access it over the network the Mac does not know it's an NTFS drive. It works via SMB which is the native Windows drive sharing protocol. Once shared via SMB NTFS looks the same as FAT-32 or even HFS to the client OS.

connect the drive, copy over the files to the mac, then format it to JFS+, and copy files back.

sorted for read/write.
