So I was looking around System Profiler today when I noticed something...

SONY DVD RW DW-U10A:

Manufacturer: SONY
Model: SONY DVD RW DW-U10A
Revision: A43h
Serial Number: EA5CF93A
Drive Type: CD-RW/DVD-RW
Disc Burning: Apple Supported/Shipped
Removable Media: Yes
Detachable Drive: No
Protocol: ATAPI
Unit Number: 0
Socket Type: Internal

I thought Superdrives included in Macs were "DVD-R" only...does this mean I have a DVD-RW drive, or is this just some sort of misprint/generalization?

No, in all likelihood it really is a DVD-RW drive. I'm pretty sure that every Superdrive Apple has shipped in at least the past couple years has been -RW, as almost every DVD burner is -RW or -/+RW.

Apple never went out of their way to support the -RW features, but I've been burning test DVDs in iDVD for at least a year using -RW discs, and Disk Utility has no problem erasing them.

Grab a DVD-RW disc and try it--they only cost a few bucks if you shop around.

Well that's freaking great news. My sister has been wanting to get a DVD-RW for her Dell for a few months now. Now I can just offer her use of mine by networking the two suckers and dragging the files over.

Mostly family photos and stuff. She wanted to be able to edit the same DVD over and over, rather than going through one-time burn discs.
