Is Folding Bad For My PeeCee

Well two things...

1) You dont need to bump after 4 minutes.

2) 100c would be boiling... if your computer is still running then no it wasnt at that temp.

... Folding isnt bad for the system, theres plenty of people around that do more than a folding program... ive had 1080p video render on a pc; taking about 4 days to complete as premiere rendered away.... I just got a simple 2400 sepron with a standard fan on the cpu, and its always run fine.

The only way i think youd even get close to 100c is if there was no cpu fan; in which case you almost deserve to have it blow up in my opinion.

It's not dangerous as much as it a complete waste of electricity.

100degrees C is a crazy number. Sounds like the app you're using is multiplying the numbers it's getting from the diode, or something; try using Motherboard Monitor.

What temperature do you get when you turn off folding? (I assume you're talking about the protein folding stuff)

I'd stop the folding process and wait a bit, take another reading. Start folding again and try a different app to get a second opinion.

I'm running CAD software (3d models and rendering), Safari, Mail, playing music in iTunes and folding on a dual G5 at this very moment. Both my CPU's show a temp of 150F/66C

Make sure the computer has sufficient space around it for some airflow and the room isn't too hot.

fyi, 29ºC is 84.2 and 100ºC is 212ºF...... if you got that directly from Aida32 thats very strange. I use Aida to do inventory on the school computers and I've never seen it wrong. I'd try using the program brap suggested.

As for you computer being 100ºC thats not good..... is it overclocked? if so, what is the CPU voltage? Are you using a stock or aftermarket heat sink/fan? Are you using thermal paste?

And folding, if done properly, shouldn't noticeably decrease the life of your processor, but if you've got temperatures that high I'd be very very weary.

Not a waste of electricity if it can help with the advancement of medical science. I for one am willing to spend a few extra dollars a month to help out in this small way.

I think you temp sensor is off. Update you Mobo bios and it should lower the number. The P4 shut down temp I want to say is 75C or 80C. they are destoryed if ti ever hit 100C. (more so they melt I want to say around 90C)

folding temps

Since I started folding on my dual 2.5, my typical CPU temp is 86C. I'm not too keen to have it run at this temp 24/7, but I haven't had any performance problems. The typical temp when I'm not folding is 73C.
