Hello,

I was wondering if anyone has upgraded their mac mini's optical drive, or has heard/read of someone doing it. I bought the base 1.42ghz and would like to put in a DVD+-RW -the Mathsita \ Panasonic UJ-835-B \ Slim Multi DVD (located at http://www.dfwdepot.com/osc/product_info.php?cPath=22_29&products_id=139) or, preferably, the Pioneer DVR-K04L \ Slim 8.5GB DL DVD (located at http://www.dfwdepot.com/osc/product_info.php?cPath=22_76&products_id=234) ... mmm dual-layer burning in mac mini.

Anyone have any ideas on if it'll fit, and, perhaps of equal importance, if there will be a heat issue?

I have also heard that iLife '05 will let you burn in the application suite with a non-apple DVD/CD writer, and wanted to know if one of these would work.

Anyone have any ideas, help, notes, comments .... :)

Thanks,
Matt Miga

Actually, the model Apple uses is the UJ-835-F. There is some talk about this at www.xlr8yourmac.com (scroll about half way down the front page). The -B might be very similar to the -F, the -F might even be a -B with a modified firmware. I think it's wise to check that site for reports from other users who attempt to replace the drive.

Since they just started arriving a few days ago, don't expect reports on upgrading the drive for a few months. Hopefully we'll find out sooner, but it could take a while.

As far as upgrading the firmware to enable 8X burning, nobody knows if this is possible, but I think we'll find out within a couple of weeks.

firmware doesnt speed up drives usually, it's to do with the hardware...

as towards a dual layer, if it's fast, remember one golden word: heat. what if it melts your mini?
