What if Apple Computer had licensed the Mac OS?
What if IBM had not allowed Microsoft to license?

...what if Commodore had not messed up their Amiga line???

...what if the Tramiels had not run Atari down???

You should also read news.com.com user Joe Belkin's comments on this article:

Some very interesting and in-depth (perhaps an understaement) speculation.

If you have not already, you guys should all read John Gruber's take (http://daringfireball.net/2004/08/parlay) on the subject of wether Apple should have licensed Mac OS or not. Although I don't think he disagrees' with the News.com author that it probably would not have worked, he goes into a great deal of depth about why it would not have worked and why the question of licensing is not as simple as it seems.

You're right - a very interesting article. Like the bit about MS music

I was about to post a link to that comment and you've beaten me to it...

Yep, it's that great. There were some bits there that I already knew of, but I learnt a lot from that post. A very interesting read! Especially the last paragraphs about Micro$oft ;)
