iBook G3 wont boot with Airport card plugged in

I have a G3 iBook I've put together from spares just as a project. Everything works fine and will connect to the internet over the ethernet cable.

As soon as I plug an Airport card in it refuses to boot, it won't even try so it seems to be a hardware issue.

Is it possibly a dodgy Airport card or something else?

It's a 2001, 600Mhz, Dual USB, white 12" iBook.

Is it possible to test the Airport card in a PC?

Is it just a normal PCMCIA wifi card inside the Apple packaging?
