Got a letter today, TW just bumped the speed from 3mps to 5mps (download) no upload change I am aware of. Reset my modem and got these results.

I recently noticed that my TW cable modem speed increased from an average of 2350 kbps to 3000-3500 kbps, for no apparent reason. Guess they must be upgrading their equipment all over the place.

Well I only live 1 hour north of you, so don't know how big of a region they are doing, just happy they are doing it. It required me to do a modem reset, maybe you will bump some more after a reset.

And your speed might be higher because I am right across the street from Johnson & Wales University and 1200 freshmen... lotsa people on my particular cable node.

Is there a website where you can test the speed?

On my cable modem, in the back is a reset button (cutoff one end of a Qtip and use the shaft) to hold in. I use 3 Airport Expresses and the reset process had me down about 1 minute, the AE lights turned yellow for a bit while everything was reconnecting.

Your link gave me a very low 1.3 (could be a nieghbor bogging it down).

I used this link (http://www.bandwidthplace.com/speedtest/) .

5 Megabits down, 300 kilobits up. Yeah, I know. Roadrunner is generous but they don't seem to want to give me too much in one direction.

That's all theoretical of course. I usually take it in as fast as a server can dish it out. :)

I just tried your link stubeef and got a 4.2mbps. This is a joke im no where near that speed on the net or private transfers. It said 1mb file in 2 seconds which is total bull. How is this rating the speeds?

Ah, it's nothing. There is just a particularly memorable scene in an episode of Strangers With Candy involving a beef salesman named Stu. I thought maybe you were referring to it.

I just found this on the Journal-Sentinels webpage:

Time Warner Cable announced Monday that it's boosting the speed of its Road Runner Internet service this week.

The company will increase the maximum speed of its basic high-speed Internet access from 3 megabits per second to 5 megabits per second, and
subscribers of the premium package will see a surge from the current top speed of 6 megabits per second to 8 megabits per second.

The speed increases will be phased in over the week and will not require home visits from Time Warner technicians, according to a Time
Warner spokeswoman.

The company also announced the availability of new video mail service, which Road Runner subscribers can access through the Road
Runner Web site.

Comcast just up'd theirs from 3Mbps to 4Mbps this week too. And for $10 more per month I just upgraded to 6Mbps down and 768K up. I think I've got enough for streaming HDTV now. Bring on the iMovie Store :D

Interesting to see cable speeds finally creeping up a bit. Up in far northern California, Cox (the only option other than SBC DSL) recently bumped everybody from 2 or 3Mbit to 4 or 5 (there're two plans). SBC is still a weak 3Mbit.

But it's so frustrating to visit my in-laws' home in Japan. They live way out in the middle of nowhere, and their local DSL company (a Yahoo! partner just like SBC, actually) was offering plans with up to 50Mbit for about what I'd pay for 5!

And if for some reason 50Mbit isn't enough for you, urban areas could get a direct fiber connection at 100Mbit at relatively reasonable cost. I'm sure real-world performance isn't that good, but still, makes upgrades to 5 sound pretty sorry.

I wonder what the infrastructure/business rip-off difference is that makes it like this is?

Hey,do you happen to know if the Apple dealer inside Computer World in Appleton got shuffles in yet? I called a week ago and he said they could come in at any time over the next 2 weeks. They are probably sick of hearing from me.
