Mirroring to the TV and keep 1920x1080 on the monitor?

I was think about buying a 720p TV. It says that it can down-convert a 1080p signal to 720p. I want to be able to use a splitter to use just one DVI port. Will the monitor remain at 1920x1080 or will it be forced in to a lower resolution? Has anyone tried?
