Mr. Cringely travels down some very interesting roads in that article.

Some likely, some unlikely, but all VERY interesting and fun to read and ponder.

Yeah, it was an interesting read and the sheer scope of the other guy's suggestions was phenomenal. I don't doubt that Apple is looking into the concept, they'd be stupid not to, and the Netflix type of business doesn't seem to be all that profitable, but it just seems too much. Although, computer companies in general are changing by leaps and bounds and the whole concept of technology is as well. So, maybe he's not too far off.

the only way to make iflicks(netflicks substitute) is to make a video pod (like he said) but the screen would need to be 5 inches minimum to be useable. Apple would have to make a handheld tablet/newton thing.

i'd love to see the long term R&D room at Apple. They probably have prototyped all these kinds of things, just to see how they would be used.

I think the best point is that the physical media and shipping costs are a vast majority of netflix's costs. If download speeds could be fast enough (download a movie in an hour, is that possible?), an iflix store would be a great way to leverage the business model.

Has nothing to do with Apple. Gillette was targeted for hostile takeovers many times. This just made Warren Buffet over a half billion dollars richer,
I'm sure he really needs the money. With Apples cash on hand I think they can fend off any hostile takeovers.

I think his "math is fuzzy". The 30% to 60% number i know is wrong, because I know that the margin for their non-retail chain is exactly $33, or 13%, not 30. Also, way back I remember reading apple makes only ¢5 on each iTunes song.
