Remove earphones-->Pause iPod. Vice versa?

I have a 4G ipod and love the "remove the earphones-->pauses song" feature. However, occasionally when I plog the earphones back in, it automatically plays again. Is that supposed to happen every time? It usually doesn't happen. Think there is a problem?

I'd appreciate any tips.
